I would never buy a #smartTV, because #nonfreesoftware. Yet I'm the one that gets called in when a family member's #Vizio becomes unusable with #Netflix & #Amazon apps suddenly failing. What does Vizio tech support say? They said: "buy an #AppleTV".

I want to say to my family: ditch #netflix. Ditch #amazon. And don't buy any more smart TVs. It's all #DRM'd up the yin-yang anyway. But they will reject that advice. Is there any #freesoftware for any decent streaming services?

@0xdecafbad thanks for the tip. Emby looks like users have to bring their own content. Not sure the old folks can handle that. I thinking more along the lines of #FOSS tools that work w/streaming service (& I suppose that implies #DRM)

@resist1984 You will have too look hard to find a TV without the smart in it and harder it seems to get.For streaming you can use Kodi + Odroid or RasPi.

@humanetech @0xdecafbad @Snowcode I used Kodi as a PVR ~6 or so yrs ago, but AFAIK it needs either a live TV/satellite, or a library of stored content. I don't think it can interface with a streaming service. Also, I just went to the website & was disturbed to find it's on #CloudFlare. I can't stomach working with anything that subjects ppl to CF. /cc @shellkr

@resist1984 @humanetech @0xdecafbad @Snowcode Yeah, there are probably not perfect solutions out there... but Kodi is probably the closest you get.Personally I install plugins to get streaming... like my countries national TV e.t.c..

Hi @resist1984 👋you might want to have a look at the websites of your larger regional libraries. 📚I can only speak for Berlin, Germany here: The VOeBB (a collective of local libraries of Berlin) offers a cheap anual membership that also includes streaming from filmfriend:https://www.voebb.de/https://www.filmfriend.de/For French/German speakers, I can also recommend https://www.arte.tv 📺Would like to hear about similar English options 🙂

@resist1984 @paulakreuzer @switchingsoftware @fruechtchen Been thinking about this for a long time, too. Perhaps the best way is to make your own library and put on a USB drive/self-hosted server. As for supporting artists, I think it depends on what kind of artist/label it is. Some deals give the label a share of _everything_ the artist earns. Some deals are 50/50 of the record sales. Some, like myself, release music under copyleft/CC licenses and often share their music for free.

@resist1984 I've faced the same issue before, but am not aware of any such services. What I *am* doing is looking for good movies & shows I can find outside of Netflix, et al & listing them online. Unfortunately my family rejects the audio adventures & old movies I'm finding...https://adrian.geek.nz/movies

@resist1984 Oh, I know what to advise: Go to realhouse.com , shop for movies for them, put those on a USB stick, (give that to them as a gift), & plug it into their TV.Almost everything on RealHouse is DRM-free, but you'll buy each movie individually. There's also Vimeo On Demand but I've had worse luck there. This is probably the best you can do...

@fruechtchen @switchingsoftware @resist1984 From a privacy and climate standpoint I can recommend downloading videos illegally.1. By not paying you are not supporting capitalism, the root of all evil.2. f you download, you only download the video once, but can watch it many times. If you stream, you download the video every time you watch it. More data traffic -> more CO2.3. If you download it nobody can track how often you watch which video, so they can't profile and manipulate you.

@paulakreuzer @fruechtchen @switchingsoftware @resist1984 i agree with most points except 1 because yes there are lots of big corporations behind movies but there are also thousands of jobs in the industry. And just not paying for something that took a lot of effort to make seems work. Its just like if you did not pay to go watch a play at the theatre, the company might be big but the comedians still need to earn a living.

@fsnet @switchingsoftware @fruechtchen @paulakreuzer The big companies involved are affected by boycotts and sharing well before anyone at the bottom feels it. Salaries still pay out regardless of the profit margins at the top.
