ThreadIn 2005 I got caught in a tornado in Nebraska.I was on the freeway when the emergency call went out on the radio, and they told everyone to take cover. The entire horizon was filled with lightning flashes like this. It was easily 100 times worse. Looked like giant strobe lights everywhere.https://www.liveleak.com/view?t=C3qlb_1583272817

The rain was so heavy that my wipers had no effect. It was like I was parked in a waterfall.I'd read that it was actually more dangerous to take cover under a highway overpass than to stay out in the open, so I kept driving, looking for somewhere to go.Finally I saw a diner off the freeway, so I took the exit.

In the parking lot, I realized I was in an honest-to-God frog fall. There were tiny frogs coming down with the rain. They hopped all over the asphalt. Each one was about the size of my thumb.I ran into the diner, where I met the two Iraqi owners and a young cowboy sitting by the window. He had his feet up on a chair with his ankles crossed, and he was drinking a Bud from the bottle.

"Where's the storm cellar?" I asked one of the Iraqis."There ins't one," he said. "I can't believe I left Baghdad for this."I went over to the cowboy."What do we do?" I asked him."Nothing," he said and took a sip of beer. "If the tornado hits, we all die."He was right. So I sat next to him and watched the tornado approach.

Even though it was nighttime, the lightning made everything visible. The tornado was a perfect funnel cloud. It reminded me of a cartoon belly dancer.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCKsNbrdmo0

The Nebraskan belly dancing tornado went through cornfields but missed the diner.People ask how anyone could live in California with the earthquakes.Well, they don't happen EVERY SINGLE YEAR.It was the Democrats who chased me out.Democrats are far more destructive than earthquakes and tornados.END

@ThomasWic Glad you made it! We were once driving with our kids through Worchester, MA, in the flat lands and it was awful out. Kids in back singing songs and ignoring the rain. Hubby and I are looking to our left as a funnel cloud starts to descend from the sky about a tenth of a mile off the highway. I whisper quietly to my husband, PUNCH IT! Gunned it up to 100, thank God it wasn't raining too hard, but we outran it. You can still see tornado damage off the road in Shrewsbury 10 years later!

@ThomasWic We left CA in 2010 - as soon as we could after Obama became President. and things have only gotten worse... I am hoping the people will remove Gavin "Mayhem" Newsom.

@ThomasWic There's a place in France Where the ladies do a dance...From the sacred American girls handslap games tradition. Alas couldn't get past the first verses, and 45 years later still wonder about it.

@oystergirl @ThomasWic Wow. Just out of curiosity, was this the same tornado event where people recorded the tornado crossing the bridge in downtown Springfield, MA and then it obliterated Monson, MA? (June 1, 2011, late afternoon, second longest tornado path in MA after the Worcester tornado of 1953)

@ThomasWic I had stopped at a large grocery store and was in the back of the store when suddenly EVERY light went out including emergency. Just stood there & waited for the emergency lights to come back on then headed to the front of the store where the windows are.The entire parking lot & every vehicle was green. When I went out I realized everything was covered with leaves. Driving home saw uprooted trees close by.Thankfully the weak tornado was starting to pull back up when it went over.

@ThomasWic Years later I bought a mobile home. At work on day a few weeks after moving in, I got a tornado alert on my phone. I was i the office with 2 male co-workers & we checked the weather map. Could see there was a severe storm in the part of the state where I now lived but they were making fun of me anyway. Tried to tell me that just because I lived in a trailer didn't mean a tornado was going to appear & hit it.

@ThomasWic Driving home I could see trees snapped & huge sheets of white in the tops of others. Found out later it was tobacco netting.Got off my exit & things looked normal so I decided to stop at the Walmart less than 1/2 mile from my place. There were work crews in the lot cleaning up broken trees & a tractor trailer blown over on it's side. Workers said power went out & they were terrified but no one hurt. When I went home, there was a pile of tobacco netting in the lot across the street.

@ThomasWic There are a lot of places I would not want to live; mostly because of tornadoes, but also because of massive rains and snows. I prefer peace and quiet with perfect asphalt roads and level, unbroken sidewalks.

@ThomasWic I paid for my last year of college and rent on an apartment with tornado repairs. Me and a couple of college buddies fixed damaged houses. One I remember had solid brick walls, everything from the top of the walls up was gone. The top of the walls were about 18 foot high and 12" wide. I could never walk those now. The inside of the house was undisturbed, magazines still laying on the coffee table. Morse Oklahoma I think, east of Henrietta.

@ThomasWic I lived in Memphis, TN for most of my life. When I was 6 years old a tornado hit our house. My dad was an architect and had a drafting table that weighed one ton. My dad put my mom, brother and myself under the drafting table where we huddled together and listened to the roof of the house being ripped off. We had to live in a motel for months while the roof was replaced. In 2007 a tree was uprooted by a tornado and planted in my living room. I'm terrified of tornadoes.

@ThomasWic A little over 20 years ago I worked in Orlando at the CBS affiliate. We had tornados strike in February 1998. They produced a special report for it. I did some graphics and animated a 3D tornado and the extruded type. Almost the belly dancer, but way too quick. https://youtu.be/e0bLdr0fKl4?t=20
