Anyone have some tips for a first-time project using #raspberrypi ? Looking at using it for a audio streamer.

@peterhebert As with most #RPi projects, get multiple SD cards, or a good USB stick/drive. SD Cards have a mean time to failure of approximately 12 seconds, so you'll likely burn one or two. There are some pre-packaged audio streaming Pi distros, too.

@peterhebert Also: a good USB cable (with a switch, preferably) for good, stable power. A lot of issues with SD cards come from power sags with crappy USB cables or hooking them up to your computer’s USB port. Also also: once you’re good on the design. Back it up. I do “normal” backups at least once a month with Borg or similar. Once in a while, I’ll pop the SD card out and make an image of it with DD just in case. It’ll be as big as the card itself, but I know I can just drop it on a new card

@ndegruchy thanks for the info! I'll make sure to have multiple SDs. Saw some add-on boards that allowed the use of m2 SSDs, I'm guessing that you can't run the OS off that.

@peterhebert This is Linux (presumably), baby. You could run it off a stream of conscious thought as long as you were able to keep the data flowing at an acceptable rate. It may be true that you'd have to have the bootloader on a small SD card, but the bulk of the OS could live on the SSD. Depends on how the device tree works on ARM, tbh.

@ndegruchy @peterhebert Or... OR.... or... use an ARM board that is not brain dead and has flash on board. BeagleBone comes to mind, also a few OrangePi variants.

@bamfic @peterhebert Or, you know, this. Rock64 is beastlier than the Pi4, and is probably not nearly as single-minded as the RPi.

@peterhebert Hi! I just came across your Raspberry Pi quest. I am running Raspbian and DietPi off of an m.2 SSD on two Pi 3B+.
