I don't understand the XMPP hate.. It is or has been the backend for *most* chat services (Meaning it's tried and true)It supports the OMEMO/Signal-Double-Ratchet protocol, OpenPGP, and other encryption out of the box.It is fully open source and doesn't require many resources to run.It supports extensions to its protocol (meaning future-proofing)It's decentralizedI literally can't ask for anything else.

@yoke the main problem I have with it is that there doesn't seem to be any decent clients for it, something that's fast and easy to set up with an interface similar to Telegram or Discord would be nice IMO. I just wanna be able to sign up for something and have a username and be able to create private encrypted DMs and group chats easily

@sylveon I can understand the lack of a great client, but Gajim, Dino, Pidgin, Conversations are valid options. (Conversations is actually great). There are desktop clients across all platforms, mobile clients are sparse (but if anyone uses iOS why are they even here lmao?)I have no clue why Discord’s interface is so sought after, it’s so busy, bloated, and makes finding things impossible (I have never used discord, but I have used Slack and it was bad enough there).. But, telegram and discord are totally different clients so I’m not sure what you want in a client… Honestly, if you want to “be able to sign up for something and have a username and be able to create private encrypted DMs and group chats easily” neither Discord nor Telegram are companies I would trust with this task and in fact, OMEMO and PGP are both FOSS, have been audited and tried and true…

@yoke I remember it having issues with interrupted or low data connectivity for status, which made it murder for phone batteries. My experience with this is a few years old, though

@robocephalic iOS or Android? I have used Conversations since 2016 or so and it hasn't eaten battery since 2017 (Android 6 really helped...) if you're using iOS , then good luck! I have not seen a single client work reliably, and have a decent interface. Most of the ones that *do* work well are ridiculous because they mitm some stuff..

@yoke i mean, they're both different, yeahbut the structure of having "servers" with multiple different "channels" is really nicepidgin and xmpp have UIs that makes me feel like I just got time warped back to Windows XP and not in a good waydino seems the closest to what i'd want, actually. but i litearlly did not know about it until now, because all information about XMPP is spread across the internet in hard to reach places. the only problem with Dino is that it only supports Linux, and if we want normies to adopt something we need clients for windows and mac and android and iOS that are as good as that one

@yoke i see you saying "if someone uses iOS then why are they here" but sadly not everyone on the fediverse is as GNUpilled as you aredo you want to have normal people use open source protocols where they actually get privacy, or do you want to make it so they can't

@yoke it's definitely possible to make security more convenient than it currently is. most big tech companies and governments actively push to make security inconvenient because they don't like italso, it's super easy to install applications that aren't from the walled gardens on android and windows. so i don't see why you're blaming google and microsoft, they're actually pretty good in that specific casebut apple isn't. which sucks. but you can still get apps onto the app store if you're willing to put some effort into it.if you like free and open source software, and want people to use it, maybe you shouldn't get angry at the idea of making it easier to use.

@yoke @sylveon Discord's interface is *fine*, but that's the best you can say about it. There's plenty of room to improve.

@yoke @sylveon I have to live in it everyday. It's actually quite useable. The real clutter grows at a manageable rate as your use does. Again, could be *much* better, but for most users they don't even know there's anything wrong.
