you ever think about how in shows about a fictional Great Musician or books about a fictional Great Poet or whatever the person who's making the thing has to be so fucking confident in their own skill as an artist that they could make what would be considered "revolutionarily good art" via the standards of the in-fiction universe

@HTHR I think about that in scifi shows when they try to show 'current' music

@HTHR this is a problem with writing any kind of genius character, going back at least as far as Sherlock Holmes. It's difficult to impossible to write a character smarter than yourself and most authors finesse it by lowering the intelligence of the rest of the characters. As far as "great artist" characters specifically, the best choice is just to never actually show the art, only the process of creation and the reception.

@modernmodron @HTHR and the classic "Newton, Einstein, and Cochrane" configuration where they get you to imagine future genius-level achievement by priming you with two historical examples

@HTHR i mean a good character archetype for that wuld be the kind of cocky 'i fuckin know im epic and can do this' their major flaw would be their confidence as it would be hubris and while yes they were good they would overestimate themselves
