I've said this before, but it bears repeating: if you're optimizing anything other than your program's primary bottleneck, you're wasting your time.

It follows that if you don't know what your bottleneck is... you are in no position to fix it.

@sirCorrect, but figure out where the bottleneck is is a non trivial task. Thats why performance engineering should be present from the start to the end of larger software or infrastucture projects.
