Imagine repeatedly seeing a trailer for the same movie format. Every week a new movie with a bunch of women, talking to each other, looking badass, having personalities and doing interesting stuff. You'll see 15 or more people in each trailer, they're all female. Protagonists, female. Antagonists, female. Background characters, female. Plot, based on female interests. There's one man and he is.. pretty. This is my movie experience, but obviously gender reversed. IT'S SO F-ING BORING!

This rant was brought to you by the trailer for The Gentlemen. Yet another all male movie except for one character. https://youtu.be/Ify9S7hj480

@Gina This may be why some television is better than movies these days!

@Gina This is boring for men as well. I guess these movies are marketed to boys who haven’t come out of puberty yet.

@randulo true. I hardly ever watch movies anymore, it's all series now. Much better for my short attention span too 😅

@Gina Because boys spend a lot of money on movies, perhaps. I looked a the cast of The Gentlemen. 9/67 are women. I think most war movies have a better ratio.

@bitnacht a while ago a guy insisted on taking me to 1917 and called me 'political' when I told him I don't enjoy all male movies about male interests. Literally 200 men and 1 female background character: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8579674/?ref_=adv_li_tt

@Gina What? That sounds like a cool movie; I'd go see that. When is it ...Oh. Finished reading. Never mind.

@Gina Well, often the better TV is long form, so 7+ hours on a single story arc! But with great actors, writing, direction and photo, more compelling then the Nième caped macho man (or now occasional woman) saving the world.

@Gina and by the way, there seems to be a new wave of female main characters now in TV fiction, which is a nice change. The better shows have usually had secondary cast females in decent (but not main) roles.

@Gina Agreed, but it's beyond boring, it's toxic. Warps perception and fucks with our heads, conjures subconscious thought about who gets center stage, who makes things happen, constructs a weird notion of 'normality'. The Bechdel test is so simple and yet so many movies fail it, some of them quite surprisingly. Making women into props dehumanizes, removes agency. It is an important bit in gender division and oppression, paves the way to all kinds of discrimination and aggression.

@Gina Well, there were only very few women on the battlefields of that war, so I understand that some movies don’t have the time to focus on them. BTW. how do you feel about Marvel changing the gender of norse god Thor?

@bitnacht Fair enough, for war movies. But that's why I don't go see them. It's so lazy to just change the gender of an existing character. Why not create a new character with its own movie?
