My sister became impossible at the age of four. She wandered away from my mother in a crowded department store and got lost. When the staff returned her to my mother, my sister kicked my mother in the shin.My mother bought her a Barbie clothing change to try and smooth things over.On the way home, my sister opened the blister pack, rolled down the window, and threw out the Barbie clothing items one by one.

My guess is that she has narcissistic personality disorder. When she and my brother lived together, my sister would come home from work and strip down on the way upstairs, leaving a trail of clothes and her purse and car keys. She had a dog that she totally neglected, so we had to walk him and clean up his manure from the back yard.

I always write people off, while my brother insists on confrontation. The reason I don't confront is that it's generally a waste of time. By their actions and words, people show you that they aren't open to improvement. Finally my brother had a showdown with our sister, and her defense was, "If I want to do it, I should be allowed to do it."I wasn't surprised, but my brother was shocked.

The next day, our sister moved out, leaving her entire life's worth of possessions behind. So I read her diaries.Pure madness. She was the only girl in a family of five children. In her diary she complained of always being the last kid chosen for the family football games. We never played football. To this day, I don't know how to play football. The diaries were total fiction.

I haven't spoken to my sister since 2013, when our parents died. She moved but didn't give us her new address or any way to contact her.She has three adult children who all live at home and spend all their time on social media. Her husband is a 57-year-old box boy at Walmart. He stacks boxes. It was impossible to connect with him. He claimed to be former US Army Special Forces, but he failed all my clandestine tests.

When we lived in Tyler, Texas, my sister never spoke, and she spent all her time in her room.At some point, my parents got her an orange kitten who she named Sherlock. He was an inside-outside cat. One day my father told my brother to go start the car to warm it up.Sherlock was napping on the fan, and he died.I didn't know what had happened. My sister came marching into the house. She went to the filing cabinet and got Sherlock's medical records.

People like Pelosi and my sister don't understand what others are capable of doing.I never warn anyone. My sister did tons of stuff designed to make me tell her to stop. But the reason I never did was that I wanted her to regard me as an unknown quantity.I'm happy to say that everyone in my junk pile of a family is afraid of me.Good.I want them all to leave me alone. @ThomasWic Thank you, Thomas, for sharing another part of your life. One thing I will take away from your story is: "Some things are unforgivable. Some people deserve no forgiveness." It seems that often we are told just the opposite and encouraged (berated) to do the "right" thing. For some of us, me included, what you have said is the right thing. Again, thank you.

@Cdubois @ThomasWic God. That's the situation I always describe when saying I understand a crime of passion. Your spouse sleeping with your sibling. I can't understand murder for money, or thrill killers, but I always would judge less harshly in the situation you describe. A double betrayal, and the person just loses their mind for a moment. I'm not saying it's OK, I'm just saying that it's closer to something I can understand. Glad you could walk away.

@ThomasWic Dear Thomas,I’m sad to say a very very similar situation played out with my youngest daughter. She was obsessed with a big wedding-we didn’t have money for one. There was an incident with her where she disrespected my husband and I to a point that we and none of our family went to the wedding. It’s been over a year...we are better with her out of our lives. Thank you for sharing the story. It helped me.

@ThomasWic Thank you for sharing that, I had a sister much like yours. When she was four my grandmother told my parents “you will have trouble with that one”. She was the fourth born of the five of us, beautiful and smart, but started down a bad path at 14 or 15. Drugs became her thing and we were all used, she wrecked my parents. She died at age 56 from cancer, the drugs caught up to her. Master manipulator was she, and blamed me for being a “bad sister “. Sad.

@ThomasWic My husband and I (having a QEII moment) watched the SOTU half a world away and cheered on POTUS for the substance and delivery. The strange antics of the Speaker were odd enough for such an occasion but the final suicidal act she made with the pages was disgusting. Spiteful and demeaned the whole House. If she is not carted away from the public gaze this week, it will be a deeper stain than fast action would leave. A pox on both her faces!

@ThomasWic Mine is a similar situation, we're a family of 5 and my only brother is the middle child. Haven't seen him 5 yrs & don't need to. My youngest sister is just as bad, I haven't seen her in 10 yrs. My brother showed up at my parents house last week in spiked heels, lacy anklets, a lacy top, spandex pants and enough makeup for 10 hookers. I don't need or want these people in my life. I hate drama. And they say I'm the one with problems because of our rotten childhood.

It was interesting how the other children noticed it and talked to her about it, but she continued having the "me, me, me, it's all about me" persona. My husband had a severe heart attack. We used most of our money reserves for all the co-pays, heart monitoring, meds etc. She knew we didn't have money. I'm ashamed and sad. I hope my story helps someone else.

The entire family has written her off. Except for my mom! I guess mom enjoys the verbal abuse! I see by the comments in here that many have a crazy sister, family member, or they know someone who is crazy. You’re correct, Thomas! @DonnaLea @skhillx3 I believe that in my mother’s case, she was coming of age during the rise of feminism. It really messed her up. She bought into it and it has kept her a prisoner within her own isolation. Up until recently, I was the only one who had anything to do with her. I’m all for fairness but feminism brought superiority to women.

@Ballerina I think part of my Mother's problems was that her parents were killed in an accident on her 15th birthday, she married at 16 then had 5 children before she turned 24. Her parents were not affectionate and I don't think she knew how to be either. Feminism really had nothing to do with it, for her. She was wrestling her own demons. @skhillx3

@DonnaLea @skhillx3 My mom didn’t have the greatest upbringing either. Her mother was a drunk (to which she repeated) and her step mother was horrible to her. Her father was aloof. She met my father at 18 and married to get out of the house. She had two children before the age of 21. She felt trapped. Feminism didn’t help.

@DonnaLea @skhillx3 Not the drunk part. The burning down the house part. A friend of mine recently told me what Proverbs 14:1 says:The wise woman builds her house, but the foolish tears it down with her own hands.I choose to be wise. I feel like the Phoenix rising from the ashes right now.

@DonnaLea Similar here. My Mom was born to her 40-year-old mom, and her Dad died unexpectedly when my Mom was 6. Grandmother was the coldest fish - wacko- there ever was, and my Mom's two older brothers were 12 and 16 years older than her - out of the house by the time her daddy passed. She grew up alone with grandmother, with my grandmother cutting ties with all extended family. My deranged grandma would flake out from time to time, abandoning my mom to the..@Ballerina @skhillx3

@skhillx3 @ThomasWic @skhillx3 , your story about your daughter brought deep sadness and tears. See our daughter won’t have anything to do with us. I’ve never shared this before. I’m so sad that she’s not in our lives. This entire thread is a good thing. God bless you and all commenting on this thread.

@itouchu @ThomasWic Same. I feel like everyone just has a point where they say, "Enough." when it comes to toxic family members. I reached this point with my mother many years ago and my father around three years ago. I just felt so tired of it all and, last year, I decided I had completely had enough. To help myself out, I was reading a book titled, "Mothers Who Can't Love," by Susan Forward. In it, there was a story about a woman who described herself as a "good Christian woman."

@itouchu @ThomasWic @MysticIris After a few sessions, this woman began shouting and swearing about all the awful things her parents had done to her. The author teased the woman, asking if these were words a good, Christian woman should say. Her response: "I guess God wants me to be happy more than He wants me to forgive them." That response has stuck with me and rings true for me as well.

@MysticIris @itouchu @ThomasWic Wow, thought provoking stuff for sure. Many years ago I read a book entitled "People of the Lie: The Hope for Healing Human Evil," by Scott Peck. It rocked my socks. It was about my parents, especially my mother.I highly recommend it.https://www.amazon.com/People-Lie-Hope-Healing-Human/dp/0684848597

@ThomasWic My philosophy about parents or siblings is similar to Roseanne Barr’s: if I’m alive at the end of childhood, parents did their job. Cannot do anything about any of it as child. But can as an adult. Remove yourself and heal. Takes time and perspective. We all will make it.

@Cdubois @itouchu @ThomasWic Yeah, I think about that quote a lot when dealing with family stuff. Through reading that book I came to realize that God doesn't want me to be unhappy. I've been reminded of that these past few days. Thank you for the book recommendation! I've been meaning to read that one since @ThomasWic discussed it a while back. I've been looking for something to read recently, so maybe it's time I got around to reading it.

@ThomasWic when it comes to personality disorders there is no cure. Sometimes the best thing you can do is remove yourself from that person’s reach.

@ThomasWic I’m so glad you were able to escape the toxicity of your family. Some of us are still unable to make that final cut—even though it is warranted & necessary. But that’s another story.

@ThomasWic 😂😂 This really hit my funny bone for some reason. I mean the brother-in-law failing your tests. Our families are the best and the worst of us.
