@Kat I have ECC RAM in my NAS, I don't think I would want to change that. Just wondering if there's any big reason to care about ECC RAM for a VM server.I don't think I'd be able to get it for all that cheap, and I would need to buy a motherboard/CPU that can use ECC RAM, so that just adds more money to it.

@HolotRyzen desktop chips support ECC ram (although unofficially), so it wouldn't really add any significant cost to the project to get a compatible motherboard/CPU.If you need it though is a bit of a different question. If you're relying on this VM server for something important, then I'd totally get it, but if this is just a fun side project that isn't going to be accessed outside of your LAN, then you don't really need it.

@Kat Ok, thanks for the info.I'll have to think about if I want to get a second hand Xeon server off of Ebay or build a Ryzen server.

@Kat :senko_hm: I'll have to see if I can get Ryzen chips off of Ebay for a price that's worth it.

@nekojanai @Kat I just want a server for VMs. I *could* use my desktop I suppose, would be more than powerful enough if I throw in some more RAM. But I do I really want to have to worry about whatever is running in the VMs on my desktop?

@nekojanai @Kat Australia is pretty limited with this stuff in my experience. Ebay seems to be the best place to find stuff.

@nekojanai @Kat I suppose I could also put my GPU into my old computer and use that for my desktop. Then just use my "new" computer as a server. My old computer has an older i5 in it, but it would probably still be fine tbh.

@ewafEh, I'd go with ARM, you get better performance/watt than an ancient Intel CPU. You'll have to find an ARM CPU which can be used without blobs though, which isn't that easy to do. @Holot

@HolotIf ARM ever becomes mainstream, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it gets a widely implemented CPU-level backdoor. Thanks to ARM Trustzone, you wouldn't even need to modify the chip design at all to backdoor it, you only need to compromise the boot process.@ewaf
