Private schools criticise plans to get more poor students into university.Rich kids might get discriminated against they cry, not one bit bothered about the actual lack of opportunity for poor kids. 🙄https://www.theguardian.com/education/2020/jan/29/private-schools-criticise-plans-to-get-more-poor-students-into-university?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

One of the biggest reasons poor kids are put off is the constant barrage of being put down as kids. You can't tell a whole group of people they're shit and then expect them to achieve their potential. And that's without the financial burden and the rest of it - dealing with class bias and the crabs in a bucket syndrome. Can't win. @Camille

but they paid all that money, and compromised their morals etc etc, to become rich in the first place - so that their child will have an advantage. if you make it *fair* they should get a refund. poor dears. @Camille I do wonder what happens to the tutoring kids when they get to uni. they spend secondary having a 1-1 ÂŁ60/hour tutor for all their hard subjects to make sure they get As and into uni. then what?

I agree, our year at school (an absolutely terrible school by all regards) we’re constantly told by multiple teachers”you are the worst year we’ve ever had, you’re lazy, thoughtless etc etc.” THEN when GCSE results came back they said “your results are terrible, we’re too ashamed of you to publish them in the local paper” . I wonder why our GCSE results were terrible ? I think they believed the insults were motivational! 😂 Bizarre. @QuinnLeigh @Camille

Agree. Poor kids get told on a regular basis that they’ll never amount to anything. You’re a kid from a less privileged background aiming to beat the odds? Stand down kid. You’ll never make it anywhere anyway. But the notion that a meritocracy ‘punishes’ the privileged is one of the more ridiculous things I’ve heard in a while. I mean, it seems like they issued that statement without irony. Mind you, at least in the UK they’re paying the economic cost of that privilege in school fees. Here in Ireland we subsidise exclusive fee paying schools. Really. Go figure. 🙄@Ladyfat @QuinnLeigh

They’re the ones who spend their time lodging appeals on the grades they receive, and complaining about the lecturers.I had a student who sent a snotty complaint to the Dept head because they had to go to the library to get a course reading. Imagine! She couldn’t just google up a pdf & was outrageously required to schlep into the library! This final year student also told me she “didn’t have time to read books”.That’s what happens to them.@FeartnTired

@FeartnTired @Camille Not to uni - my parents needed me to start working at 18 to contribute to our household income. I had a decent job and was a higher rate taxpayer for a while, until health stuff got in the way. Now I have a less well-paid job and a slightly better work-life balance.

that's a shame, but you did well on your own efforts, so that's good. sorry about health stuff, I have plenty of that getting in the way of ruddy everything. My Mum had to leave home to get work at 16 so she wasn't permitted even to do highers or attempt uni. I never got the chance either. I started an OU the year before last - you should just do it, even if it's only 1 module a year. It's surprising how quick the time goes. Fees are paid by government so you don't have to worry about that and it's a tiny amount to pay it off unless you're earning a bucket load. @LastEXXitToNowhere @FeartnTired @Camille

well my Scottish linked trivia is no use to you then 😋 . you sound very cultured. being very low brow meself. I fancied studying Psychology. Or Dietetics. did computing at college for a while, then sewing. I'm a maker, like to know how things work. So although I like colour and crafts, I'm not an artist and tend to be very 'I like it, I don't like it' about art. not very useful in such a degree! @QuinnLeigh @LastEXXitToNowhere @Camille

@FeartnTired @QuinnLeigh @LastEXXitToNowhere @Camille I would love to have been able to take a proper seamstresses course when I was still able to see properly to sew.But never lived anywhere that offered dressmaking classes.I can use a pattern in a basic manner but don't know how to do a properfitting to my body shape or the tailoring tricks.Well, have read plenty but work better from having someone to show mein person. Also, being crap with numbers always makes me panic when it comes toanything like that as I know I'd be staring blankly at any numerical instructions 😬 Not helped by never having got to grips with the metric system, I still work in Imperial.

I'm sorry you can't sew any more. really sorry. I'm afraid that I won't either with current health stuff and it's scaring the shit out of me. I did dressmaking for years - making not fitting, started reading books and got Threads magazine to learn more about fitting, but most teachers don't teach it. then got to go to college part-time for 3 years to do Clothing Technology and Manufacture at HND level. that included lots of industrial sewing techniques, pattern drafting for production and I took optional classes for fitting and hand tailoring. There were still MASSIVE gaps in my knowledge! they really didn't teach fitting on the many lumps and bumps that humans are. but I did learn lots.@HebrideanHecate @QuinnLeigh @LastEXXitToNowhere @Camille

@FeartnTired @QuinnLeigh @LastEXXitToNowhere @Camille It sounds good, I always fancied having the taped own body shape thing, you know the one, where you wind tape round yourself in a t shirt etc, looksso handy.I desperately miss having a hobby but between my crappy eyesight and my achey fumbly hands ...what?!! Can't see properly, can't grip properly and drop everything even when not in painat the time. Had to give up my patchwork and embroidery too, anything which needs persistent grip or seeing closely is out.

Cultured? 😜 I'm north Yorkshire born and bred for the most part...I like craft-type arts and surrealist photography. I thought the art history might expand my interest and help with analysing symbols in images. I love myth and story, old-school stuff. When asked what I wanted to be at the age of six my first response was 'a witch'. I'm still annoyed they told me that wasn't a proper job. I like psychology..I like anything that makes life feel more meaningful. On not liking some art - I'd happily have another reformation and burn the work of Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. It'd make a great bonfire for Foucault's books to burn on. @FeartnTired @LastEXXitToNowhere @Camille
