@Nobody Hey, downtown. Photos look like they were taken from the hills. There's a Japanese saying, "Even Mt. Fuji is ugly if you're close." This is how I feel about downtown. It's really pretty...from a distance.I had never seen that video. (I do know how to sing it, though.) It's amazing. Weird how the audience just...sits there. Like they don't know what is going on, maybe.

@Nobody No. It never was, though it was kinda smoggy in the 70s. But even during the riots, most of LA was completely untouched.

@oxbowcoda @Nobody I've run around such places by myself at night. They're cleaner than they used to be, but I'd be surprised if our per capita violent crime rates ever got to New York levels.

@p @Nobody Since we're on the subject, is there actually some part of LA that's like trailer parks in the desert full of gun stores and meth labs and conspiratards or is that just a Rockstar fabrication? Cause that's the California I want to live in.

@oxbowcoda @Nobody Oh, no, that's real. Gun stores, there are plenty of those everywhere, we're not New York or San Francisco. There are coyotes and wildcats and shit inside the city limits of LA proper, and the metro area has plenty of that kind of thing; Monrovia is infested with bears. You're not going to get the gun stores shut down by voters that have seen a bear recently. Meth labs are obviously not quite as common, they tend to be in lower-income areas and very small scale but most meth production is done at industrial scale far away from big cities. (Breaking Bad was correct about this detail. It's all big labs run by cartels.) Trailer parks are smaller here but there are plenty in LA. LA has less desert than you'd expect (the reason there is a city here is that this is a pretty fertile valley near parts of the coast that lend themselves to port construction), but you can get all of the above by crossing the mountains. The outskirts of the Lancaster/Palmdale area is the closest stronghold for meth'd up desert rats with guns, and they keep getting shat on by the LA County board of supervisors. The board basically makes decisions based on problems people have in the ghetto, then gubbamint drones enforce this stuff up in the desert. So you've got a trailer sitting on ten acres of sand in the middle of nowhere and some dickhead from the county comes in and says you can't use a septic tank, the statues you welded out of broken cars aren't up to code and create a safety hazard, you didn't get a construction permit for your tool shed, and you've gotta pay a fine and move out of your place until you bring it up to code. Not too far from LA are the counties of Riverside and San Bernardino, those areas are inland from here (I think about an hour east from where I live) but they are basically exactly what you'd expect from stereotypical southwestern regions, and they fit the bill completely. I'm going to mention the meth-desert show again: if you watched Breaking Bad, you have a reasonable idea of what those places are like. (I kept forgetting that the show was set in Albuquerque.)

@SandiaMesa @Nobody @oxbowcoda That's cool. I was initially surprised they filmed on-location, but Vince Gilligan is pretty cool, he's got that kind of obsessive personality that makes him produce interesting stuff.I don't know if you've seen this map, I have been waving it around at people lately. The circled "No-go zone" is where most people stay in LA. It's a really small part of the city and it's also the worst part of the city, so they get a strange impression of LA.los_angeles_annotated.png

@oxbowcoda @Nobody @SandiaMesa Kind of like some racist suburbs, Irvine is one of the weirdest places I've been. All the roads are extremely broad but also empty, and you can't tell what part of Irvine you're in because the entire city is (by law) beige and Soviet brutalist. (It might be the home to the only beige Wal-Mart in existence.) It's a horrifying place.

@chuculate Lower-right corner, just part of Orange County is involved.Beverly Hills residents do their damnedest to make sure no train tracks or bus stops or freeways get anywhere close to Rodeo Drive, and they don't even want the surface streets leading in to get any wider. The reason for this is they want it to be difficult to get there, but they always come up with other excuses. When :elon: wanted to drill under them, the excuse was something about fumes under the high school, they had a big protest.

@p @oxbowcoda @Nobody i think LA County wants those desert areas for solar and wind farms and that's why they've suddenly decided that those seemingly useless lots that nobody wanted 20 years ago need to be brought up to urban code and hooked into city utilities, even if it means the owners need to lay miles and miles of sewer lines to reach the nearest place to hook into the city system. That would cost tens of thousands of dollars, much more than the market value of the land itself, so the desert rats are effectively forced out of their trailer homes and tumbleweed farms. Then the County quietly buys the land back. On the surface it looks like simple incompetence and government overreach, but there's definitely an underlying motive.

What the hell...>In the 2016 election, Clinton was the conservative candidateI think you are mistaking conservative with conformist here. A person who just want things to stay as they are is a conformist, but a conservative in a very progressive environment will promote radical change. It's interesting that Orange County flipped completely blue in 2018. I bet these people were neoliberals voting for very progressive Republicans, until the Dems decided to consolidate their control over the region.image.png

@deadheat @Nobody @SandiaMesa @oxbowcoda > Don't they feel like using their resources to give more personality to their properties? There is the sort of person that would rather have no personality for their own place than have to cope with seeing their neighbors' personality out the window.> I think you are mistaking conservative with conformist here.I meant what I wrote. She was the candidate offering to stay the course of the previous three administrations, Trump was promising the opposite; I wasn't using "conservative" as a vague synonym for "Republican".> It's interesting that Orange County flipped completely blue in 2018.It happens. Different people show up to the polls in midterms, there are a lot of college students there, and everyone was still freaking out about Trump.
