Slowly drifting into an existential crisis because I’m a 20 year old man who hasn’t accomplished shit, my dream job is in one of the most competitive fields on the planet that’s slowly being outsourced to the third world and I’m steadily getting the feeling my IRL friends hate me :realshit:

@igeljaeger Maybe, I know that I’m a pessimistic thinker but knowing that doesn’t help shake any of the stuff I’m worried about.I think most of this is stemming from the fact that I still haven’t secured an industrial placement for the next year of my degree programme. It’s optional, but I know that’s it’s going to be just as shit when I graduate.I know people who didn’t get a job in the field for like five years after graduating and I don’t know if I’m going to be able to compete with people with a better work ethic who went to a better institution than me.

@igeljaeger for fucking real? I’m only in this scam of a course becuase my parents are both boomers who think and have literally said to me that a degree will get me fucking anywhere. If I could’ve stayed at home for the last two years and worked on my own project I would’ve done it in a heartbeat, woulda saved me over 20k in student loans, too!

@igeljaeger we have something similar where I am, well I say we have them, they’re not all that popular and there’s none of them going around. The gooberment is trying real hard to make them a thing by encourage places to offer them up, but it doesn’t look like any businesses are biting…

@VD15 the gooberment gives money to those who do, and now it's basically german culture at this point. Uni is mostly just for super specific fields or people who dont know what to do after school (cuz it's payed by the tax payers). Either way, I did "Dual vocational training" in basically 2nd level IT support at big companies like SAP and John Deere through my company, which got me my current job as an admin. They did hire me though knowing that Id need some training. I was lucky since Im msotly jsut helping out my only colleague, who was mostly just looking for a guy willing to do the parts of IT infrastructure he doesnt wanna do himself. Im fine with that cuz work experience and it's good for my CV either way.

@RehnSturm256 I’m actually over in Europe, but the same thing applies. Universities basically have a stranglehold on a lot of industries, forcing people to pony up three years of tuition fees, of which only the last year counts for anything. All of the busnisses demand you have a degree to even be considered a lot of the time and they basically get to pay you fuck all for the frist few years because despite being ‘educated’, you’re not ‘experienced’ like what’s the fucking point?

@igeljaeger I honestly don’t get why some fields are even taught in school or university. Computer science in this country has never been taught well. My entire life it’s been writing out code snippets on paper and drawing database schema by hand. Stuff you never have to do in industry. The bits you do have to do in industry is always in the form of coursework that its worth like max 30% of the grade.Take my course for example, we have a computer graphics module. This module has coursework where we had to make a program in OpenGL, something you might be exptected to do for money at some point in your life (I think I still have my thread about it pinned on my profile). That coursework took several days to complete and was worth only 20% of the grade. The rest being an exam I’m sitting this saturday. What’s in this exam? Coding the exact same shit but on paper. For some fucking reason.

@igeljaeger I’ve been wanting to quit this place since the day I started, but my dad would never let me live it down. I’m already over halfway through so as much as I don’t want to, I think the best option is just to just bite the bullet and sit through another year of learning fuck all, get my gay little piece of paper and try and suck big daddy corporate’s dick until I can pay off my loan.image.png

@histoire @igeljaeger I have and I am. I don’t even show up to lectures anymore and I still know what’s on the exam. I’m confident that I can keep up in just about any workplace but because I don’t have that gay little piece of paper, I’m basically entirely unqualified as far as big daddy corporate is concerned. That’s why I’m building my own game engine in my free time, it’s actually engaging.

@qwerty Software development in general. I know a lot of companies are starting to outsource less critical work to places like India where they can pay people per day what people here get per hour. Probably don’t even have to pay import tax on it, they’re just files at the end of the day.I’ve heard stories of some game studios outsourcing stuff like their multiplayer as well but I don’t know if any of that’s true.

@qwerty Historically, I’ve mostly used Unity. I’ve dabbled briefly in UE4 but I never really made anything in it. More recently, I’ve been making my own engine in C++ and it’s been a bumpy process to say the least 😅

@VD15 cool, I hear soo much about Unity that I was guessing that's what you would be using but its nice to see C/C++ is still being used. I've been curious about making a game or two for steam. Maybe/maybe not/but curious. If you need an assistant, I could help with level maps, game AI if its not too complex or testing. Like an intern just to see how is the industry these days. All I use thou is Linux cause I distanced myself from Microsoft ever since they required OS vertification. I got a Vista PC in storage somewhere.I can do C fairly well. I've done C++ but its been two decades.

@qwerty I debated moving to rust at some point but I decided that since C++ has been around for longer that it’d probably have better general-purpose libraries and bindings for graphics APIs.I certainly would like help with what I’m doing, though: I’m trying to get my engine to a point where it’s merits can attract other developers so I can make it open source. I want another set of eyes on the code I’m writing because I’m entirely self-tought and I’m slowly going paranoid that I’m making some massive mistake I don’t know about. In order to get to that point, though, I’d need to write some documentation and figure out how to configure CMake because it’s got a fair few dependencies right now.
