God, I've not really been active on here for a couple of days and every time I dip in I either see people upset because Alex made a joke about cake (not even on spinster, so I don't know why those upset about a man making a joke, or having an opinion, are even following him, tbh) or women tearing shreds out of each other over something else. @Mrkhvoice When Spinster first launched, someone on Twitter made a comment like "I give them 3 months before it collapses over infighting about who is the most ideologically pure in their hate." Obviously I think it's an unfair comment, but I've been thinking about it every day since then. I hope they're proved wrong.

It's rare to find any kind of internet forum that doesn't turn into some sort of a punch up. It's just to what degree. People can't help themselves. maintaining the basic principle of free speech should help. everyone needs to take responsibility for what they can't stand. if I start expecting things to be run along my moral code, and you yours, etc and so forth, it will never end. blackhole. being 'safe' from hateful views is how we got into this cult mess in the first place. Instinct says, of the worst and most obvious examples, 'that's rascist hate speech, shouldn't be allowed', but there's the top of the helter skelter! That was rather misogynistic of the person, whenever there is large groups of people (8000 members right?) there is backbiting and infighting. (honestly, I've played in many orchestras, ensembles and brass bands etc, musicians are HATEFUL bastards 😉) YET it is only groups of women that receive such a reputation for being 'bitchy infighters'. From Mumsnet to schoolyard mums to the WI you'll find us classed as 'infighters bitching over who is best'....as if the men's squash club or golf club isn't full of the same vitriol... @alex @Mrkhvoice

I honestly think part of the problem is people expecting it not to be that way. This is a high tension topic; tension runs high. The problem is there seems to be some understanding that that 'shouldn't' be the case here. We're talking about some very serious things and quite regularly we are renounced for not being nice enough to each other. It sounds so familiar you know. The be nicer narrative. We're very different people from very different places, ages, demographics- we have one issue in common (for the most part and even that is fractious) I find the idea that it would be a safer or kinder or less contentious place a bit patronising. @Mrkhvoice

I think the fact that we are on a "short reply" type platform does not make it easy to appear to be well-behaved all the time. I tend to be a direct speaker and have always been seen as "harsh" IRL while the legion of men who speak exactly like me are just seen as, well, people who speak directly. @Mrkhvoice @WrenWinx

@alex It's something that's bothered me a bit, tbh, as I think some women see this as a radfem, women only platform, which means, if that's not how you think, then you're likely to upset people. I think people know that I put off joining because I didn't want to be part of an echo chamber or a hivemind. Healthy debate and access to a variety of opinions is important to me, but some of the stuff from the past couple of days has just looked a bit ridiculous.

I know that statement is going to get some people's backs up, but people make a choice to engage or ignore. I choose to ignore and use Spinster in a different way. Twitter for me is all about arguing. There is going be a percentage of people that want to take Spinster down and the people who value this site have to prevent it from happening. @Mrkhvoice We do have our weirdness flare ups now and then! The cake thing was seriously weird. I think everyone is over that now, I hope. The other issue we have is that there are people who want to troll us. Alex is a convenient way for them to do that. They sit like vultures waiting for any mistake, or anything that can be spun into a mistake. Then we spend days arguing over it. Of course we still have our usual conversations about all sorts of things while the drama is cooking.
