@the_wonderer Japan only criminalised the possession of actual real child pornography a few years ago. Only creating and trading it was illegal before that.Now they still have widespread availability of drawn child pornography (loli hentai), and significant fan bases around famous producers of it. Such products can be bought at regular manga (comic book) shops, or fan conventions where amateur works are sold.(I have no idea how they ended up like this. They're very sexually conservative otherwise and have e.g. a blanket ban on visible genitals in all media, hence the strange censorship of the genital area in Japanese pornography while it's still clearly visible that the depicted people are having intercourse.)In regular anime aimed at teenagers or adults, it's also not uncommon to see young female characters being heavily sexualised (without actual nudity). So the "normal" anime community can easily act as a gateway to seeking out more and more explicit material, up to the point of drawn child pornography depicting extremely violent acts. It's mostly normalized via humour and fans of the stuff are frequently shameless about it.

Thanks for this, reading through now and it's as fascinating as it is troubling. I've wondered for a long time whether there's a distinct correlation between anime, paedophilia and transgenderism and the more I scratch at the surface of the topic, the more obvious it becomes. I think with anime a lot of it comes from the fact that Japan has a horrendous paedophile culture. Them and Denmark have terrible problems from their permissive laws. @socjuswiz also talked about anime and its role in his feelings about gender, so he might be a good person to talk to.@DeadBreakfast @the_wonderer

@HebrideanHecate @beccabei @socjuswiz @the_wonderer I have a friend that has moved to Japan for the third time (think he'll stay this time) and the most disturbing thing he told me about from his last trip was an open air festival sort of thing where they were handing out penis shaped lollipops to children as they entered the park.He also told me his girlfriend was harassed and groped daily on the train, which was the eventual reason they left last time. He moved back since they split up.The casual racism he encountered on a daily basis was also troubling, though he did eventually take a stand once at a train station - he and his gf were being insulted by some guys on an escalator. They had no idea he was fluent in Japanese. Or that he's a professional wrestler. Needless to say, they didn't enjoy getting a taste of his trademark running clothesline move, which he took all three of the harassers down with in a single hit.

@DeadBreakfastJapan has a literal penis festival where they parade with huge penis sculptures, wear penis hats, and sell penis shaped food. Maybe they visited that festival?Vulvas are extremely taboo in contrast. An artist who challenged this and made vulva sculptures was prosecuted for indecency. The penis festival is well known! Fertility stuff I assume, though there was that artist who got arrested for vulva art... apparently they can’t tolerate female imagery despite all the porn 🤷♀️They are terribly racist.
