“Obsessing with ‘clean code’ and removing duplication is a phase many of us go through. When we don’t feel confident in our code, it is tempting to attach our sense of self-worth and professional pride to something that can be measured.” https://overreacted.io/goodbye-clean-code/

@parrots Seems like healthy advice for me.(Tho I don't really recognize their rationalization)

@byllgrim @parrots I don't know what "clean code" is, but It is physically (alright, not really, more like mentally) painful for me to duplicate code, just as repeating the same word several times in a sentence, or the same phrase in a paragraph, unless it is some form of artistic expression.I wouldn't call it professional pride. I duplicate left and right at work. Work is pain.

@byllgrim @parrots Uncle Bob has never been capable of operating at a high enough level of abstraction to be taken seriously in the large; in the small he offers sound advice, but his principles of system development are like designing in assembly code for something implemented without consequence in C++. His arguments in the comp.object (IIRC) newsgroup against Steve Mellor, 25 years ago, were sufficient to show this.

@namark Do you think the state of things _should_ be like it is?

@byllgrim No, I think copyright/patent abuse ruined the industry. There is no infrastructure or quality standards or anything. It feels like we're in the "wild west" "snake oil" era of software. That said I exaggerated with the pain remark, I'm not really suffering, and every now and then it can be fun. I'm ok with my work not being exactly what I enjoy the most, because that means that my favorite projects can belong to me (very selfish I know).
