looks like its circling the local airport because of all the instantly frozen rain

which has me wondering why airports dont use the same hooking mechanism that aircraft carriers use to slow down landing planesTusky_1578911662133_9V15YL5KQ9.…

think about it, you could hypothetically use less space for runways and add more of them instead :cirnoThink:

@vala There are trade-offs. You now have hooks to maintain .. on every aircraft. Pilots would need to be trained; airports marked and labeled. On an aircraft carrier, if they miss those hooks they have to immediately accelerate and take off again ... probably much riskier with a large commercial jetliner. There are cargo planes that use rockets for short runways (see the Blue Angels carrier). It's a neat idea, but I feel like it'd have complications like circular runways: https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-39643292

@djsumdog makes sense, it just feels like something that would be practical here with all the ice here during winter. having something besides ground to tyre friction to slow down when there is no traction

@steph guess thats true as well, but sometimes the alternative is to circle for hours here and thats not ideal either

@vala Hmm .. have you ever seen the Wendover video on how planes land and move freight in Antarctica?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s3j-ptJD10
