People always say like "oh use your previous laptop for that" or "I don't need raspi for that, I can use my old smartphone".I was always like "yeah if only I had a previous laptop/phone", but never realized why I don't have them. Here's the thing: I don't buy a new laptop/phone/etc until the old one breaks beyond repair.

@Wolf480pl my 2005 laptop still more or less works, but it's totally morally obsolete now

@Wolf480pl I thought that was true for me too, but then I realised that I have at least 6 bootable laptops and 5 functioning desktops at home. That's not counting the raspberry pi's.I should do something about that.

@pony I think my dad had his first laptop in 2005. This thing looks more or less like a paving slab, and has comparable weight. My mum kept using it for web browsing and playing solitaire until very recently.

@Wolf480pl my dad got a company issued portable computer (it was 17", you can't call it a laptop) in around 2003 and never really used it for work, it was quite horrible thing(i think they were doing it as a relatively cheap benefit that wasn't actually meant for work too much, they just had some money to spend before the tax year ended)

@Wolf480pl @pony I think I got my first laptop around 2004 (HP something something, bought it second hand from a guy, it had no battery and a whopping 256 MB of RAM); used it for about 2 years running gentoo, no less, until my then-employer bought us slightly better dell laptops (that were still heavy AF); when I left I moved to eeepcs, then a 13 inch asus UXsomething I found with a substantial discount, now one of the thin 800€-ish lenovo machines.I still have the display of the HP thing in a box, same for the EEEPCs (both had a second life as a home server and ran until something blew up internally; batteries got stripped of 18650 cells that got repurposed for other stuff, I think I'll find a use for the displays at some point, despite them having terrible resolution)The Asus developed RAM problems (half of it is soldered to the MB) and then also got dropped on the tile floor and I had to patch the front glass with scotch tape until I got a replacement, so I wouldn't call that one usable either (the screen itself maybe, if I manage to unstick the cracked touch screen from it; the i7 CPU is still good, but I don't have a source for RAM chips and am not proficient enough with the hot air gun to non-destructively (de)solder BGAs anyway). My wife's previous laptop got a fresh Ubuntu install and is being used by her mother now (she's been on ubuntu for almost a decade already), the one before developed some power issues so it's unusable.the little ARM-and-friends thingies are another story...
