I kind of like this idea (you know, minus Windows) of having a secondary e-Ink display on the outside for whatever. Notifications would be nice. A touch screen for checking mail. Etc. Thoughts?https://www.pcworld.com/article/3511949/lenovos-thinkbook-plus-adds-a-secondary-e-ink-display-to-keep-you-focused.html

@mike Definitely! Especially for devices to be used outside in sunlight.

@mike an auxiliary eink display would be pretty neat. Though I’m struggling to find a good use case. I’d like to get an eink display for my raspberry pi to show something like the glances or htop output.

@mike @ndegruchy If you are not afraid of a little tinkering then how about a homebrew project with this as the base:https://www.crowdsupply.com/e-radionica/inkplate-6It would certainly be a lot cheaper and more than enough for notifications and such, plus one would probably learn a lot putting together a little custom infoscreen...

@totoroot I feel like that kind of display could almost drag and drop into a MagicMirror² setup (not to use with a mirror obviously, but for a HUD). That could be pretty cool.@ndegruchy

@ndegruchy I was thinking it would be pretty interesting if you could push a button to turn off the regular monitor and just flip it around for a HUD. The keyboard would be it's own stand obviously. Also, that would work in a really interesting way if you were docking the computer. You could have the e-Ink display facing you instead of the normal display and put notification information that display. That could be really fun.

@oilyfish Table top e-Reader? It's touch sensitive, so you could read emails and the like. Even Mastodon would be within reach as long as you're just reading the timeline.

@mike well, I don‘t know. I don‘t think it will actually have much of a productivity effect....

@mike I would kill for a high refresh-rate e-ink display. Preferably with more than 2 colors, but just b&w is great too... Just imagine being able to work outside without the horrible eye strain of normal displays 😱😱

@Matter @mike we had all of that in the OLPC (the $100 laptop). Its display is B/W without backlight and works perfectly well in bright sunlight. See http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Display and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_Qi. Unfortunately, the transflective LCD is patented and the IP owners seem to be uninterested in mass production.

@mike Hmm. I’m just wondering how it would work better than the built in stuff, other than the potential power savings from eink. Would it keep the system on, or just do something like Apple’s powernap where it wakes up for occasional status checks?

@mike Yes - 90% of what I do would be just fine on e-ink.

@mike I’d like it if it was functional as a secondary screen as well. But still not enough to consider fiddling with Windows again.

@mike It's interesting. I'm not a laptop person, but I'd use a desktop with a keyboard that only had e-ink display --- a hybrid display option would be great though, or a whole low-power / focus mode that used e-ink. I'd also use a tablet that was e-ink only.

@mike sounds awesome! I'm a big fan of e-Ink because of its ease on the eyes, especially compared to most of the too-shiny screens one gets these days. I could probably do everything on this except for web development. If I was searching for a laptop, this would definitely make me consider it, although I'd be more happy with something like the ONYX BOOX which is e-Ink only rather than a hybrid.

@mike It looks nice, but I think the idea is half-baked:- the e-ink screen apparently only supports the Kindle app for ebooks. Sorry, I prefer my ebooks without Amazon's DRM.- the e-ink screen doesn't support rotation, so you can't read stuff in portrait modeI got those impressions from this review [ https://www.engadget.com/2020/01/06/lenovo-thinkbook-plus-e-ink-screen-hands-on/ ].

@mike I make one like this but with a WiFi chip and just reads a Webpage that displays anything you like every X minutes and goes to sleep. But it could be nice to display a Calendar or a ToDo listhttps://hackaday.io/project/169086-cale-low-energy-eink-wallpaper

@mike yeah I did that setup with my Kindle before it was a bit slow, but very cool

@sohkamyung Yea, it definitely needs some more work, which is why I like the idea, but not necessarily the implementation.
