"I use Linux as my operating system," I stated proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. He swiveled around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision. "Actually," he said with a grin, "Linux is just the kernel. You use GNU+Linux!" I don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk: "I use Abyss, a distro that doesn't include the GNU coreutils, or any other GNU code. It's Linux, but not GNU+Linux."The smile quickly drops from the man's face. His body began convulsing, he foamed at the mouth, and he dropped to the floor with a sickly thud. As he writhed around he screamed, "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!" In a cool fashion, I replied "Abyss uses the LLVM compiler suite, GCC uninvolved."With a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life was ejected from his body. He lied on the floor, cold and limp. I've womansplained him to death.

@toast attacking gnu is cringe. Is the entire point of the distro to just pointlessly avoid gnu so people like you can write smug toots about how epic it is? If the ionly feature is "we don't use gnu xD" it sounds like shit.

@toast @sir It's actually very simple. Back in the day, there was a Linux kernel and a GNU userspace. Fair enough.Nowadays, the OS is so big and complex that it is as much Apache or Mozilla or Redhat or Freedesktop or Intel or even BSD than GNU.So we can call the system either- GNU/Mozilla/Apache/Redhat/Freedesktop/Intel/BSD/Linuxor- LinuxI will accept both, but not just "GNU/Linux"(The full name should actually be longer but you get the point)

@ignaloidas @toast I said standard, not default. And vi completely can have a shortcut reminder bar like nano (which has shitty shortcuts tbh), also your desktop's should probably set EDITOR to a notepad like thing.

@ignaloidas @toast Only thing which is a bit weird for noobs is the modal stuff but mouse can work. Also not sure what you mean for navigation but arrows works in most vi-likes, I use hjkl all the time now but I didn't until few years ago (laptops and their half-arrows and learning touch-typing) and I basically only used vi-likes for editing text.

@lanodan @toast well, technically POSIX doesn't allow arrow keys. Anyways, for me, vi-like editors are probably the least intuitive user interfaces I've ever seen, and my few tries to learn how to use them left me disliking them so much that I will rather use ed than vi. I consider all of the vi-like users victims of stockholm syndrome.

@ignaloidas @toast Uh, what?Only mention of arrow in the POSIX specification of vi is a weird "down-arrow" thing, I haven't looked at the whole thing but everything which isn't addressed in the specification is left to implementers to decide on.And tbh most POSIX implementations just sucks, most distros will almost look like emulation of Unix first releases when you open the terminal, I wouldn't be surprised that vi was added to POSIX just to stop this stupid thing of EDITOR=ed on terminals which aren't line-printers.

@cfenollosa @toast @sir Nah, many of the things you name are user applications.A good way to define which parts of the software on your machine make up the OS is to ask yourself which parts implement the POSIX standard. In GNU+Linux, that's Linux, Glibc, GNU Bash, GNU coreutils, GNU awk/sed/grep, etc. so basically GNU with Linux.Hence most distros are GNU+Linux.

@a1batross @lanodan "How brave are you feeling today?" is literally Abyss' motto right now. I'm sure you can figure out why :blobwink:

@toast @alyx i didnt even know this was a modified story. So this continues the tradition of women demonstrating their power level by taking an already established thing and slapping a female colorswap on it. Good job! I witnesss your roar.

@SteveTheDragon @alyxmy dude the original story is by lynne lmaowhich is a riff on the GNU+Linux pasta, rather than some stamp on topimagine literally not knowing copypastas and complaining about the literal meme in them

@compl4xx @cfenollosa @toast @sir The politically correct (and older) word for “mansplaining” is “Dunning-Kruger effect”:“If you’re incompetent, you can’t know you’re incompetent […] The skills you need to produce a right answer are exactly the skills you need to recognize what a right answer is.”SCNR

@compl4xx @sir @cfenollosa @toast Well, both men AND women are able to talk about subjects they know too little about without realizing how little they know about the subject in question. It’s not my fault when many feminist people seem to think that only men would and/or could do that.:akko_shrug:
