Politics is downstream from Culture. Our very first step should be to regain control over the K-12 curriculum, then insist upon liberal coursework for college starting with Western Civ and couple of Great Books courses.Geography and Civics must also be returned. Finally, taxpayers can save a small fortune and take control by purging the big textbook companies and having the state publish K-12 textbooks, subject to democratic agreement, not Leftist Teacher Union Appeal.

If a state had a public access textbook, anybody could print missing pages, any entrepreneur could find ways to provide the text digitally or in print. The cost of school textbooks would collapse. No More $300 textbooks.

@maxwhiggery Textbook publishers present pre-written bills to state legislators to prevent this sort of thingWhen easy to see example of suppressed competition is the International Edition vs Official US edition controversy.India publishes cheap copies, places like Amazon and other prevent their sale based on "copyright" and other publisher driven pressures

Wouldn't it be great if every decade, parents and citizens got to debate the final content of school textbooks, instead of leaving it to Government Employees?

@maxwhiggery Wouldn't it be great if every year patients and citizens got to debate the protocols for open heart surgery, instead of leaving it to doctors?Alas, the content of textbooks is determined in School Boards, not by "government employees", whatever you mean by that.

@Debradelai Laymen parents are qualified to judge that 10 pages on Caesar Chavez, 5 on Betsy Ross, but only 2 on Washington that emphasizes his slave ownership is inappropriate.I work with textbook publishers for a living. Primary target for influence is teachers, board members (usually the same), & large urban area District Admins, most of whom are firmly Left. Change the system so they have to influence voters/parents, then Publishers will back off the left bias.
