daily reminder that we entrusted nearly a decade of image hosting to imgur, they're gonna fuck it up one day, and we're going to lose it all

@cantinto that would have to be long after most have stopped caringi'm expecting just random wipes of old images with placeholders at an increasing pace (it's already happening, though not really enough for people to notice)

@tejrnz i feel like a lot of us just absentmindedly expect the internet archive to vacuum everything upi'm sure the "important" stuff will be safe but say goodbye to that obscure sprite comic or whatever

@freon @tejrnz You can upload stuff to IA if you want :blobcatthink: but you do have to do it manually

@freonThat's like how on BBS forums we hosted images on ImageShack. They removed all free-hosted files in 2016.As long as we stop using reddit, like we stopped using forums, we'll be good.

@b6bb the core of discussion (in hobby communities, anyway) seems to be moving from reddit... to discordso we're still kinda screwed

@amy @tuxcrafting @freon raid array in your desktop + off-site backups in case of fire (not that likely) or accidentally overwriting your drives (more likely)

@freonUgh. Why can't we all just host personal static pages and follow each other via RSS feeds?

@freon They've already lost me. Their UI has become godawful, JS required, shit. Not only that, but when requesting a direct image URL (i.imgur.com/blahblah.png) it redirects you to their shit UI instead of the image file. (Wget/Curl works though thank god, so this must dependant on the browser UA).

@net they've gotten so obnoxiously bad over the years that i'm surprised an alternative never came up and drew the power-users (although self-hosting in general has gotten both accessible and very popular)

@freon @net Probably because it was "open source", that dissuaded most people from seriously making alternatives. Currently, there are a few (Raddle etc.) but they suffer from the early GNU Social/qvitter problem where they're used by radical leftists and pretty much nobody else

@freon imgur has been very unreliable in that regard in the last few years regardless. On mobile devices they decided to serve a webpage with a thumbnail sized image instead of the image itself when visiting a link to an image. They lost me ages ago.
