@nekojanai hmmm. I have an old desktop that I was thinking of turning into a server, mostly as a learning experience and maybe add a lead in to something more serious. Looking at the specs listed in your profile I wonder how it will hold up? I guess we'll see.

@Starcake The hardware listed in my profile hardly gets used at all. It really depends on what you want your server to do.raphtalia_usage.pngraphtalia_usage_host.png

@nekojanai I was thinking of trying to put a Mastodon instance on it, and maybe some kind of blogging platform, both for personal or maybe family use. It has a quad core cpu, 3.2 GHz I think, about 16 gb of RAM and about 2 TB of storage.

@Starcake also not that I have anything against Mastodon, but Pleroma is easier to setup and uses less resources, so yeah, but Mastodon is fine too, I run both, and Misskey (my favourite, ui wise), although I hardly use Mastodon lately.

@mewmew @Starcake @nekojanai I like what I like, and I like things that are written in Go because Rob Pike created Go and Rob Pike likes APL.It helps that Honk only uses 20mb of RAM, though.

@Starcake pleroma supports the Mastodon API, so every client app that's made for mastodon should (in theory) work just as good with Pleroma

@nekojanai cool. Good to know. Upgrading the speed is an option. I just never had a reason to before. I'll at least have to contact the ISP and see about getting a static IP before doing anything else.

@Starcake@pl.neko.bar @nekojanai@pl.neko.bar It can be done with a dynamic IP. Main thing is make sure you're on a plan that allows you to host (usually requires a business plan).

@sjw @nekojanai I'll have to check. I know I'm not on a business plan. For a while, I was working from home on a VPN and they started sending me advertisements about upgrading to a business plan but they never cut me off. I read that there can be some issue with port forwarding or something though.

@sjw That's one of the annoying things about most of the US. There is only one provider in any given area, so you wind up with monopolies that just throw you whatever half rotten bone they feel like.As for "deliverance country", please see the following and do watch the full film at your earliest convenience. https://youtu.be/9gLN3QoN-q8@nekojanai

@nekojanai@pl.neko.bar @Starcake@pl.neko.bar Yep. Basically HTTP/2 over UDP with a few other tweaks. OpenLiteSpeed, LSWS, and I think Caddy already support it as well as CloudFlare.
