that ice berg meme. the small visible tip of ice above water labeled "internet squabbles."and the fucking massive chunk of ice extending far beneath the water labeled "the material circumstances that affect our safety and livelihood in a hostile world."because it really do be like that.

i am not a fan of how heated online exchanges take place with an incredibly strong gravity pulling them away from issues and toward direct antagonism, like trying to resist against an event horizon of bad faith. but i also don't question for a moment why that happens. every take on this webbed site is attached to a real person in a difficult world. i've found it useful to keep in mind. it doesn't make everything correct and agreeable. but it sure helps everything make sense.

@jackdaw_ruiz And sometimes to get to a real place of common ground, a heated exchange is needed.I believe in civility as much as the next person, but we're all complex people dealing with a lot and we're all not going to react in easily digestible ways 100% of time.Building community means persevering through intense exchanges as long as they don't get abusive.Sharing and talking just isn't going to be sexy all the time. And that's cool.

@mewmew @jackdaw_ruiz Ha you again. I’m just gonna mute because I’m fairly certain you have nothing of interest to add.

@Are0h @jackdaw_ruiz go right ahead :blobcatdunno: I've had tons of productive conversations with people on here though, from all sides and viewpoints. Civility goes a long way, especially when you apply it to those you disagree with, and calling people racists for doing the smallest thing wrong is far more likely to turn them against you than to get them to agree with you.

@mewmew @jackdaw_ruiz @Are0h Civility towards insensitive people increases the emotional burden on those who are already heavily laden with it. Fuck civility. If you are too self-absorbed to see the emotional burden of others, you have nothing of value to add to a conversation.

@horatius @jackdaw_ruiz @Are0h being treated in an uncivil way is also emotionally harmful - there's no cost or burden to not being a dick. If it's hard for you to be kind, you're a mean person and should do some introspection before calling others insensitive.

@mewmew @jackdaw_ruiz @Are0h You can be civil while being a total dick. Case in point, you.

@horatius @jackdaw_ruiz @Are0h in what way am I being a dick? Is simply disagreeing with someone considered rude now?
