I work in the arts. I was following many brilliant women and men on twitter who are engaged in this subject. But I had more than one "arty" associate approach me and asked why I had a problem with transgender people. It became clear people could not see the nuances of the debate surrounding gender and trans ideology. The people closest to me know I don't hate anyone, but I was advised that maybe my views might not "come across well" and companies I work with might be affected by this. This is insane. My views, which most people admit are not transphobic, might affect other companies working in the arts just because they are associated with me and (by their own admission) my non transphobic views. I'm aware this is nothing compared to the abuse and trolling that women get for defending their rights, but it gave me a very small insight into what's happening to people who want to open up debate about this subject. My wife lectures at a university. She more or less shares my views but could never publicly share them. It's insane.

Yes, that's a familiar story, sadly. I too work in the arts and the lack of critical thinking from (mostly) well meaning people is alarming. Also the immediate assumption that anything other than total agreement is bigotry. No debate? Red flag, more like @Fraggledaddy

Okay, but why do you have a problem with transgender people?

Aand right on cue. I don't have a problem with trans-identifying people. Do you? Who cares how you dress or who you sleep with, really? Try again. @glincelsgalore

Ah, see, I wasn't asking you. I know the site is new and many might not get how it works, but what I said was in reply to someone else. Hope this clears things up!

And it’s crystal clear that the person you’re replying to has no problem with trans people. So what are you at? @glincelsgalore

Me too! All of my friends are arts and media and I was predominantly in theatre circles but have had to start to change my career because I realised that none of them were prepared to see why this is important to me. They either want to not think about it, while maintaining I should think or comment about it either, or uphold the status quo and be unthinkingly ‘the good guy’. I have had to reevaluate what the influences in my life have been in these creative circles; I think freedom of expression and ideas (and that means to disagree with the accepted truth) is what the arts should be for. It’s been isolating, interesting and sometimes terrifying. @Fraggledaddy
