In other Dutch news, some pigs are more equal than others:“Princess Amalia will receive 1.5 million euro's every year starting at 18.”“Living in poverty: 'my mom and I lived on 15 euro's a week.”

@Gina don't worry, the wealth will trickle down! /sI can't believe anybody can look at the state of the world and say with a straight face that capitalism and the free market works, except as a vehicle for making the rich richer. If they would at least come out and say *that*, you know? Capitalism is fantastic at transferring wealth *to the wealthy*, but nobody ever defends it like that.

@kungtotte hmm I don't believe this has a lot to do with capitalism, but more so with old feudalistic structures that have been ingrained in our institutions. I find it more inexcusable that we still have political parties in the Netherlands defending the monarchy.

@Gina @kungtotte I don't see how our monarchy has anything to do with capitalism.I'd love to know why you find it inexcusable, because I like *our* monarchy. And (ftr) I get really angry about (child) poverty and how our politics has done NOTHING for decades about it.The reason I like our monarchy is because he OR she does not have political power and more importantly isn't political and thereby enhances a sense of unity.Imagine Trump giving a speech when MH17 casualties came home.

@Gina @kungtotte He would've made it political and about him, because that's what he always does."If we get rid of the monarchy, we would save so much money!"Really? You think a head of state just keep living in his/her own ("rijtjes-") house at their own expense? Yeah, don't think so. Also, for some reason, a monarchy seems to add an economical bonus.Succession is indeed undemocratic and thereby unpolitical, which I find a big advantage.

@FreePietje @kungtotte for me it's a matter of principle. We should all be born free and equal. A monarchy is the opposite of this. Also, I think Frans Timmermans by far gave the most eloquent speech about MH17, and he's an elected representative.

@Gina @kungtotte I completely agree with your principle. And if our monarchy would extend further into our societal structures, I would object to that as well. But in .nl it explicitly is not.Elected representatives don't have to be bad and Trump is especially bad (and thereby excellent for making my point). An elected official always represents a section of the population (and they can rise to the occasion), while our monarchy always represents us all. Unpolitically. By design.

@FreePietje @kungtotte except that I had no say in the choice of monarch and thus, if you believe in democratic values, it has no business representing me. In that way monarchy is no better than a dictatorship.

@Gina @kungtotte Do you really think a comparison with a dictatorship is fair?from Wikipedia:"A dictatorship is an authoritarian form of government, characterized by a single leader or group of leaders and little or no toleration for political pluralism or independent programs or media."

@FreePietje @kungtotte I see a single, unelected 'leader' with little tolerance for criticism (led than 2 years ago insulting the monarchy was even punishable by law). I didn't choose to be a 'subject.' Would you say it's a democratic system?

@Gina @kungtotte The only 'political' power our king has is signing a law by which it is enacted. So that means our king has signed the law which no longer made it punishable to insult him. And he has said explicitly that he would also sign a law in which we got rid of the monarchy. The only condition? That the law was drawn up by democratic means.I'm fine with you/anyone being against a monarchy out of principle. The pros outweigh the cons *for me*.I'm surprised by your current 'arguments'.

@Gina @kungtotte Then I'm done with this discussion.I think the Netherlands is one of the most democratic countries in the world. Any comparison with a dictatorship is absurd imo.And I won't insult you(r intelligence) by explaining how our democracy works.
