Crucial difference between the North East and mainland India protesting #CABBill:NE protestors: Hindu, Muslim, whatever religion we don't care. We don't want any migrants of any kind in our territory! You all have colonized us enough.Mainland protestors: You can't have a special bill giving priority to specific religious identities. This is anti-Muslim!

The communities that came into the NE with the British Raj in the late 19th century (Bengalis, Biharis, Marwadis, etc.) were seen as colonizers by the local population. In a way, they were colonizers, just second in the hierarchy of power. The trauma from this power dynamic has remained - and resulted in a strong desire to push out the "non indigenous". Thus the NRC was welcomed by some in the region (shut out the non indigenous), and the CAB is a thorn in the side (can't let them in).

@hackiechan I somewhere read that one of the point of assam protestors is the granting of ST status to some communities. How relevant is that in all this? Genuinely curious

@IshaKaushik To people who arrived before a certain date. But even in Karnataka the state has passed legislation requiring some work to be done by state residents in preference to migrant workers. And they have already started arresting manual scavengers who had previoulsy paid off the police to work here. @hackiechan

@DesCoutinho interesting enough, the migrant workers brought into Bangalore to do manual scavenging work/house help/security guards were done by a BJP MLA. He got them in and settled them into chawls along outer ring road. And even helped them get Aadhar cards. There was reporting on this a while back. @IshaKaushik @hackiechan

@ashwin @DesCoutinho @IshaKaushik @hackiechan It is documented that the cops extort from Bangladeshi workers many of whom do the work that no one else will. People are using the words "colonisation" when in reality cops are squeezing out every last penny from these workers before the state discards them https://thefederal.com/opinion/bengalurus-bangladeshi-labourers-should-be-proud-the-shame-is-ours/?fbclid=IwAR1ytdf2zY_H5OY1tG0bLr38lW0IIIDjpJ5_W2TKfodFRjA2uSmONGFf9EE

@ashwin @DesCoutinho @IshaKaushik @hackiechan Many are female, domestic & care workers and farm workers too. Documented cases extend across coffee & coconut plantations from Kerela to TN. Many of these workers are also from Assam, Tripura. The real colonisation is happening in Kashmir, last I heard there are plans for an investor summit

@aindri I thought they already had one. And there are multiple panels happening on how to invest in Kashmir. @DesCoutinho @IshaKaushik @hackiechan

The first thing that happened in #Kashmir was massive clearances done on land use changes - diverting forest land for non-forest purposes. In fact, the Forest Advisory Committee in J&K cleared 1.5 times the no of proposals in 3 meetings in Aug / Sep / Oct than in the entire 2018/2019 period prior. @Samyukth Oh God!This is so bad. These mindless projects have already ruined uttarakhand, all the land slides and cloud burst aren't natural but a side effect of these "development" projects(there's no development either, just ruining the ecosystem). J&K is even more sensitive. This is why illiterate people shouldn't be allowed to make policies. All himalayan states should be protectionist like himachal, but sadly they took even that option away from J&K by demoting it. @ashwin @aindri @hackiechan

@IshaKaushik Yes, I look at the current regimes record on papering over environmental clearances (multiple occasions) in the name of "development" and came to the conclusion that at it core it is about resources and hence money. I remember tooting that in response to a post by @Vishsai IIRC. @ashwin @aindri @hackiechan
