Poll: an engineer at $previous-job sends you an email one day, with a few questions about some code you wrote while you were there. What do you do?

@sir Answer the best my memory allows me. As long as it's an one-time thing, help the sister/brother out.I am also assuming that I know that person. If a random person asks, then no response to be expected.

@sir Depends on the employer. If they were awesome and gave me lots of , I'd happily answer "a few questions" from one of my teammates. If the employer was difficult or just greedy, though... I'd start building the paywall: send a consultancy contract with an hourly rate including minimums (eg- $150/hr, min 4hrs/engagement.)This one is especially fun if you know it's only going to take you 15min.

@sir If it's a short answer, the first time I'd probably give a courteous reply.Anything else I'd charge an hourly rate

@sir probably answer the question if I left that job on good terms. If they don't take up too much of my time.

@sir as the others have said: if you left on good terms and it’s a quick answer, just do it. Otherwise, charge hourly rate.

@sir Depends on the former employer, the relationship with them and how much time does this waste. If the former employer was problematic, or if answering the questions would be time consuming recurring, I would call the boss to propose a consultancy contract, with a an hourly rate and a minimum

@sir I'd consider it helping a fellow worker, not helping the employer, so I'd do a reasonable attempt at answering.

@sir If it was proprietary, I probably have long forgotten what's even going on there and would be of limited usefulness if not contracted for some sensible amount of time to go through the code and recall everything. So unless it's literally just answering some simple questions from the top of my head, won't do their work for free.If it was copyleft, I'd likely be glad to help, of course provided that I can actually find some spare time for that.

@sir run. I myself have promised on countless occasions to kick my predecessors in the balls.
