@NSure The Holmes I liked was in Conan Doyle's books. Jeremy Brett was somewhat akin to the image I had formed in my mind. After that no one came close. Elementary is not my cup of tea and I stopped watching after a few episodes. Cumberbatch version was a joke. Anyways such choices are too subjective and open to debate.@KnottedBow @shirishag75 @SilkyNsa

@KnottedBow @SilkyNsa One thing I was always mystified and curious about and perhaps the ladies could talk and explore, if I'm not wrong both are writers is if anybody had explored the similarities and dis-similarities between Holmes and Siddhartha (the one who became the Buddha). Especially more in the elementary series where Holmes in more than one occassion identifies himself as high-functioning pyschopath who does violence on the occasion if he feels it's needed. 1/n @VivekT @NSure

@KnottedBow @SilkyNsa Unlike Siddhartha who understood the preciousness of life even of those whom we would call as murderers and rapists. Both Holmes and Siddhartha appear to be quite vulnerable and emotional characters but perhaps this sensitivity is what lead Siddhartha to become Buddha while Holmes stayed where he is. I dunno how the women see it but it probably may be worth exploring, dunno. @VivekT @NSure

@NSure @KnottedBow @VivekT @SilkyNsa for me it added mystique to an already mystifying character, I was a youngling then so was influenced. Don't know if you saw elementary or not. I found Jonny Lee Miller to be more freer than the british adaption which sadly became something of a joke. I don't really know what tempted them to make that last episode that didn't go anywhere :(

@shirishag75 @KnottedBow @VivekT @SilkyNsa I've always felt that the joke is because of the sheer admiration people have for Holmes' character.I mean, you don't want your super detective to be an ordinary fella, do you? If Superman, Batman, Spiderman were ordinary, what's the fun?? Or if Joker, Venom or Mr. Freeze were ordinary?Similarly, what's the fun if Holmes wasn't cold, inhuman, superior, Meerschaum pipe smoker, cocaine addict, misogynist? πŸ˜€ Or Prof. Moriarty the uncle next door??

@NSure @KnottedBow @VivekT @SilkyNsa Also Jeremy Brett as the original Sherlock and the steam engine (am bit a fan of the old railways) is always nostalgic. He probably made a template which made it twice harder to forge any other than the character potrayed in the American series which is far removed from the classical one. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090509/

@VivekT Nads on both as both characters are somewhat narcisstic in nature. With Hercule more so with the chip on his shoulder and of course would have to learn belgian and french . I do like Sherlock as he is potrayed today, a very much flawed character and very much human (The American elementary series) . Other than how the deductions he makes, it is interesting how the character had grown in elementary if you have seen it. @SilkyNsa

@shirishag75 @VivekT @SilkyNsa I like Holmes - warts and all - just like Sir Arthur created him!!Only Jeremy Bret portrayed that, even Basil Rathbone only comes a distant second!Granada TV Holmes is almost the exact dialogues too, while 'liberties' have been taken with ALL other adaptations!Poirot, Miss. Marple are great too, but IMO, Holmes is the Greatest!

His Khan in Star Trek was just so good!Blame it on the script writer, director etc., his Sherlock is below par.Sherlock follows the same pattern: a series of small deductions, then one big one, followed by some more small ones. Episode Over.Cumberbatch portrayed it all well enough, but the whole is a lot leader than the parts, IMO

@NSure agreed. Even his Stark persona was over the top but that goes with the character he attempts to potray. I liked some of his earlier characters. He sadly can't pull off a serious deeply layered complex character or maybe that was what was told to him by the casting director. Till we don't know the internals, we don't know why he chose to play the character the way he did unfortunately :(@VivekT @pursephoney @KnottedBow @SilkyNsa

@shirishag75 @KnottedBow @SilkyNsa @VivekT The Holmes I admire was NOT a psychopath. Yes, he did push Prof. Moriarty down the Reichbach falls, but that was in self-defense. Yes, Holmes burgled on occasion - the most famous ones being in A Scandal in Bohemia & in The Bruce Partington Plans, but NEVER for self-gain, it was only to clear his client's reputation!!

@NSure Yeah, but that was in a different era and a different context and the stakes were not as high as today. I dunno if you watched elementary or not. If you had, then I doubt you would be as certain as you are right now. The stakes have never been higher. @KnottedBow @SilkyNsa @VivekT

@shirishag75 @KnottedBow @SilkyNsa @VivekT You can't have Holmes in two eras! Why Holmes, it should be a different character (which it is), with a different name & persona (which it isn't)

@SilkyNsa there is nothing to forgive. I would just suggest that perhaps it's not a good idea to write if you are driving and rather share your thoughts when you are in better surroundings :)@KnottedBow @VivekT @NSure

@SilkyNsa @shirishag75 @VivekT @KnottedBow Holmes is the Father of Forensic Science. His analysis of Blood & Blood Splatter, Cigar Ash, Ballistics, Crime Scene investigations into length and smell and other stuff, his stern warnings that one must start observations with an open mind, that whenever all possibilities are eliminated, we have the probable event at hand, etc., etc., are valid 120 years after Doyle first wrote about them!If you have Prime, follow this link:https://www.primevideo.com/region/eu/detail/0FWNLPXUWVHV4ANZMCIXN9C8ZC/ref=atv_sr_def_c_unkc__5_1_5?sr=1-5&pageTypeIdSource=ASIN&pageTypeId=B079HMZBRM&qid=1575295961

@NSure @shirishag75 @SilkyNsa @VivekT I was thinking. πŸ€”πŸ˜…Are we the Conan Doyle Sherlock purists ?? πŸ˜…πŸ™ˆThe thing with series and film adaptation is that the creative team takes the root thread and spins their own version of it, right ?It's their creative freedom.I mean, I was happy that Elementary came in modern setting with modern forensics, computer, gizmos and all that jazz...But at the end of the day, I will happily go back to Conan Doyle's Sherlock. πŸ™‚

@KnottedBow Exactly. Elementary tried to showcase how Sherlock would adapt in these fucked-up times. His lover is Moriarty who is also a murderer and manipulative but at the same time his lover for all-time (frenemy anyone ?). Watson is an Asian women with whom he cherishes his companionship and is friend, mother, sister, confidante all rolled into one without the romantic part. @NSure @SilkyNsa @VivekT

@shirishag75 @KnottedBow @SilkyNsa @VivekT Wondering if the times are fucked up, or whether the Writer of Elementary is... No wait, I know - it is the Writer!!

@shirishag75 My question is why would they require a Holmes Watson Moriarty triangle to suit the new age problems? They could easily have created new characters or were they depending on these characters to get the initial draw?@KnottedBow @NSure @SilkyNsa

@VivekT @shirishag75 @KnottedBow @SilkyNsa You echo my thoughts!!It was obviously to cash in on Holmes (and Watson and Moriarty) name(s)!
