Good morning Spinsters. ☕ I'm on my 2nd cup of tea and reading a bit of drama on Twitter. I'm interested in your thoughts on this one....

Why a form of oppression that some poor women engage in to survive poverty should be above criticism is beyond me.Women working as prostitutes to survive poverty might prefer an alternative, rather than telling them this form of oppression is ‘valid’. @LadySparklePop

Her initial statement does seem pro-prostitution/porn etc . To me it’s the sort of argument that shouldn’t go any further than a few messages and a mute but due to the politics or twittage will be picked up by every MRA and TRA wishing to paint radfem/GC women in a bad way, like our man Karl always willing to show how feminists are a terrible bunch that don’t support “ black women, lesbians or men”. As if middle aged white men are stauncher advocates for those groups and of course ignoring the brilliant black feminists, brilliant lesbian feminists and yes even male allies that have contributed! @LadySparklePop

@Camille I honestly found the entire exchange to be baffling. Dr Em tweeted something I agree with (using a regrettable example, as I personally think it's best to avoid comparisons to black oppression/slavery when discussing social issues) and SM responded in a way that wasn't relevant to that specific tweet (unless there were other tweets that were not included?) but then DE took SM's tweet and ridiculed her when I think the tweet was taken out of context. SM's subsequent tweet showed that she was reacting solely to the lynchings comparison and as a result, 2 important voices are at odds over something that could have been avoided. 🤯

@Ladyfat It is a bizarre response for sure and I can't figure out how it fits in at all. She clarifies in her subsequent tweet (the first picture) but what she says certainly isn't apparent in the tweet to DE.

I’m obviously not black but I bloody despise when people act as if black women and lesbians haven’t had a huge impact on GC discourse, both literally called out this gender bullshit before the rest of us, people want to deliberately stir up shit. Divisive nonsense. @LadySparklePop

I think also DE was trying to portray that utter sense of duplicity in men that support porn but also claim to support women. And like it or not her comparison was supposed to evoke emotion and it did. I think there are far more serious cases of racism on twitter than Dr Em using that simile! @LadySparklePop

It’s twitter and what happens when we engage on complex subjects there, lots of carelessness and misunderstandings because it’s hard to really explain what you mean. It is not helpful to use lynchings in this way, in fact it’s extremely insensitive and not ok. It will absolutely stop black women from listening to the rest of the message, because it’s too far. There’s another way to make an analogy without doing so. Then the reply was also careless because it did seem like, ‘ you can’t criticise the sex industry because...’ but then I saw what she meant myself. I have these discussions in real life and we work it out and move on realising no insults were meant. @Ladyfat @LadySparklePop @Camille

@LadySparklePop If we can't criticize things that some black women participate in, we can't criticize anything at all because there is always going to be a black woman, somewhere, who does it. This is the problem with using race in arguments. In most cases the argument in question is specious and the reason for bringing up race is suspect, to the point of being questionably racist in itself. If your argument can't stand on its own merits without a black woman as a prop, you need to fix your argument.

@Ladyfat Yes, as far as I can tell, the simple fact that she referenced a racially sensitive subject caused a reaction in SM that was somewhat confusing and disproportionate. Though I also agree with SM in her follow up tweet when she said the SW industry should be absolutely be criticised, but not necessarily the women in it, as they often have no other choices, or at least feel that they don't. Most are poor and have no other means of survival and if we criticise them, then we are alienating them from the movement. Having said that, DE didn't criticise sex workers. She criticised men who watch porn. :blobwaitwhat:

@Eah Absolutely. And let's be honest. Feminist watching porn ≠ civil rights activist lynching black people. So in that way, the comparison was OTT to say the least. But her point was valid.

@LadySparklePop I actually misread it the first time through so I missed that she was responding to a person who compared prostitution to lynching - so yeah, it's just as bad when people on our side do this. The comparison to lynchings WAS alienating to black women, she is right.

I don’t actually think that is what she meant to imply either. Watching porn to many, is watching coercive rape. A lot of these female porn stars die from either suicide or injury. A lot of women die as a result of acts that were inspired by porn. It’s not a good comparison at all, it’s hurtful, but I do think that harm is harm and women do actually die or are harmed because of porn. But trying to explain this via tweets is way too difficult and the analogy way too complicated and insensitive @LadySparklePop @Eah
