What're y'all discussing that patented crap obsolete shit format that is the GIF? Just leave it in the web's compost bin, it's rightful place.Fun fact: it's possible to do animations in SVG :blobfoxwink:

@AkaiHebi svg is for vector graphics while gif is raster... not really the same use case.

@mewmew @kitsune @AkaiHebi Quite disagree with this one:- vector: always keep it as SVG so it's reusable, maybe export to either PNG or JPEG (in that order)- 2D anime kind of simple colors: PNG, maybe consider GIF if there is very few colors or it's monochrome- photos/many different colors or many gradients: JPEGNo real idea where WEBP fits yet.

@kitsune no, for raster I'd definitively pick a VP9 or AV1 WebM, who are more widely supported than APNG and MNG.GIF is compost ingredient since Firefox 3.5 and Chrome 4.0 :)

@mewmew @kitsune @AkaiHebi >Is it like, real big>JPGTriggered. Unless I downscale it I'd rather keep it in a raw format.

@lanodan @mewmew @kitsune WebP (VP8/9 compression) stomps on JPEG, but just like JPEG2000 and JPEG-XR it lacks software support :<That is, the current duel is between HEIC (H.265 compression) and WebP (AV1 compression). The former only being majorly pushed by Apple

@AkaiHebi @mewmew @kitsune H.265 can go away because of the royalties. And looking at https://caniuse.com/webp it's just not present in Safari (while WebKit supports it).

@AkaiHebi @kitsune> who are more widely supported than APNGeh? pretty much every browser supports APNG and even if something doesn't, it will at least display a static picture. on the contrary, VP9 is not supported in safari and AV1 is supported only by this year's firefox and chromium releases
