Since I'm a newbie at living close to a forest and farming, I asked neighbors what they do with their natural ponds that are filled by springs - unanimous response was to pour bleach to keep the water crystal clear - otherwise algae will take over.Chose to risk it and add more life to my pond instead of eliminating it - introduced fish a few months ago, some died - apparently expected when they are transported long distance to a very different environment, but many survived.Snapped a photo today while they gathered to feed :)Photo of a natural pond with ab…

Here's what the pond looks like. Diverted water from another spring using pipes and letting it pour into the pond as it needs aeration - the underground springs aren't enough to move the deep water column. Will create a cascade waterfall and add air-stones and pump to add more oxygen and reduce stratification - that's when the water far below the surface doesn't get enough movement and settles down, and often lacks oxygen.Photo of the pond, the water lo…

@tariquesani if the price is killing everything in it, nah! I'm good with how it looks. And the fish feed on the algae, so less feed is needed. Double win :D

@hiway look up anaerobic or biological filters. You can make one yourself very cheaply. Takes a couple of week but the water becomes crystal and the flora and fauna is healthier. Algae in water means excess nitrates...

@tariquesani Although we don't use any fertilizers, people uphill do, so I'm guessing some does seep into the water.

@hiway I had created one using coconut husk and gravel in a 200L drum. Takes time to get the anaerobic bacteria going but works pretty well as long as the nitrates are not atrociously high.

@Battrebeet sweet! All the best with your experiments! We need innovation and breaking the routine on our farmlands.
