I’ve just seen a feature where apparently mastodon 3 can move followers to a new account?! (Thanks @infosechandbook)Anyone know how this works or how well it works? Very curious, and good timing bc I was thinking about a new account right now!

@katastrophe >how well it works? You lose all of your posts (they will stay in the old account), and we actually lost ~275 followers (15% of our followers) that weren't migrated for unknown reasons. 🤷‍♀️ #mastodon #migration

@infosechandbook @katastrophe >You lose all of your posts (they will stay in the old account), and we actually lost ~275 followersmaybe cause of pleroma, moving isn't supported for now, but i think someone is already working on that.I had to refollow too ^^v

@infosechandbook that’s less than ideal. Surprised there’s no post import and export function! I’d guess the followers were ones from other platforms but I’m not sureThanks for the input tho! 😀

@katastrophe I think you can actually export all of your posts but you can't import them afterwards …

@infosechandbook yeah that sounds about right unfortunately. I also wonder if your followers continue to follow the new account if the old server disappears - ie, is it a server side redirect or is it notifying followers servers about the migration

@katastrophe I think they are actually following the new account. They are listed as followers on chaos.social and unfollowed mastodon.at. But somehow 15% of followers got stuck in the process. So these 15% of followers will be lost in 3 months if they don't follow our new account on their own.

This is internally implemented as sending a Move activity to all followers and Mastodon supports it (by auto-following the new account) since several versions now [0]. I guess the remaining 15% are people using other ActivityPub servers (e.g. Pleroma) that do not support Move out of the box.[0]: https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/pull/9629
