Interesting perspective from Tim (@oldvetcodes) on moving AWAY from #Linuxhttps://oldvetcodes.com/why-im-sort-of-leaving-linux/

@kev @oldvetcodes Somewhat on the same page. I have my Fedora laptop and the Manjaro gaming laptop my son and I use, but I really do not mind using Windows 10 on my work machine. The Office and OneDrive integrations work, and I really think Microsoft could have 0wned BlackBerry in the business market if they had taken it seriously internally and bet on full 365 Integration.

@kev @oldvetcodes That's the sort of reasoning I had when I moved to Mac ages ago. I'm back on Linux at work, but still on the fence about fully committing to it.

@kev @oldvetcodes this seems like a weird argument to me. He's not saying that Linux needs a lot of tweaking to work and that's why he prefers Windows, he's saying that he can't stop himself because Linux lets him tweak. Is it the fault of the OS if you lack discipline? I don't know...

@kev @oldvetcodes I was somewhat the opposite. I used to know Windows well enough that I was always fighting with it, but Debian Just Works™ enough for me not to have to.

@kev @oldvetcodes Hmm but no mention of loss of freedom. choosing an operating system because you value your rights and want to use a computer system that respects your freedom even though there is an ever so slight tax on convenience, but a gain for customization, would be wiser. Convenience is really all that matters to most.

@kev This does not match my experience (I am currently working at a Microsoft shop and have to use Windows).I don't consider it "productive" when the payed-for OS is showing me pop-up ads while I'm working. The other thing that baffles me is the lack of any official repos / app store. It's 2019 and you still have to search around for exe files on the internet. This also means you get no automatic updates for the applications. Just the OS updates that may pop-up at random times and always require you to reboot.

@kev @oldvetcodes sounds like his work deals with windows more, so maybe its the right tool for the job. Also as he says he can't stop tweaking to get work done. Hence why I sometimes install Debian or elementary and gnome desktop and just leave things alone. Especially in elementary. Hell sometimes I even use a tty, very much less distractions that way.

@kev @oldvetcodes The reasoning is more or less: "the countless possibilities of Linux distract me, so I prefer to BUY a proprietary system with not too many tweaking possibilities and an antivirus software (a must) to get things done". Well, doesn't work for me.

@kev@oldvetcodesThere are a lot of people who say that his reasoning is flawed, but you don't know what 100% of his situation and why he took this decision. I don't either, so I am going to speak from my experience. I have an extremely important project that I have to get done this year and while I like Linux, I had to admit to myself that Windows was much more stable on my specific hardware than any distro I've ever tried. I've had no problems in those 6 months with Windows

@kev @oldvetcodes The reason that I was able to move people from Windows to Linux was not because these people were interested in FOSS or a privacy respecting OS. The reason was that their PC's had become so slow or they were tired of the forced updates. With Linux their machines felt like new again. It convinced me that Windows is just a badly designed OS (aside from the privacy issues)

@kev Interesting? Rally? Look if you like someone you and want to mention them you can just do it you don't have to make up reasons you know? This is pretty much the perspective most of us have on most everything in our lives that we don't fully understand. We make choices on a whim. Best of luck to Tim on their journey of learning programming, and understanding software better. Hopefully their next writeup on the subject will be much more insightful.

@kev @oldvetcodes interesting way of looking at it. I might have felt the same way, if there was a way for me to see proprietary software any other way but broken. It's not even then I hate windows, rather than disaggree with their approach to building software.I'm 100% sure the same things can be done with it that I do now, and I'd be happy with how it functions. It's just the idea of using software of which there is no sure way of finding out what it does thats worrysome.

@kev I can relate to this. I was full-time desktop Linux from Redhat 6 on but switched to Mac a couple of years ago. I still use Linux for server stuff but I can’t see me ever using it as a desktop again. There’s a lot to be said for an OS that ‘just works’.I installed a desktop environment on my Linux server a couple of months ago and found that HDPi screens are still an absolute mess, which is complete nonsense in 2019.@oldvetcodes

@kungtotte @kev It's chronic distro hopping, procrastination, and constant tweaking. All problems I have. I confess to all. And I didn't blame the OS. And still use it.. title is "Why I sorta..."

@oldvetcodes @kungtotte I have to agree with Tim on this one. If I can tinker, I will. Windows doesn't let you do that really.

@ericbuijs @kev Agreed, you need good up to date hardware for Windows... I would be annoyed running it without at least an i5, 8gigs and an SSD

@oldvetcodes I know several people that actually threw away perfectly good PC's because of this. Insane, we have enough e-waste as it is! Luckily I was able to salvage a couple of them installed Linux Mint and donated them. Even kept one for myself.@kev

@ericbuijs @kev I thought about this at my work.. especially now with Win 7 eol. We are recycling a ton of old PCs as we do upgrades for people.

@kev @oldvetcodes Including a Linux Kernel was the smartest thing Microsoft has done. It took down many barriers for me, like "what useful OS doesn't come natively with tail?"And now we have it without having to install Cygwin.

@kevConfession: While I design open source hardware and am an Armbian developer for Linux SBC's, my primary machine is Windows 10, and I SSH to a headless machine for building. Why?Well, the Windows machine "Just Works". The Linux desktop is just too distracting and laborious to get "Just right". Now, my i3 mobile setup is Linux (horsepower is a concern, so cut out the fat), and I have a Pinebook Pro coming soon. My home server is an ODROID XU4 as well.@oldvetcodes
