Holler if you feel this way too. I am new to #Fediverse and I feel anxious about what I don't know because there's a lot to process and lot of made up words like plemora, flebicast, z̸̸̢l̵a̷̡͜b̨̢ut̛ubé͜ and what not. I feel like there are more awesome things and they are being hidden from me. For example, I don't want to sound stupid all the time, but how does one watch a video on Peertube?

@goofysufi Pleroma is software similar to Mastodon- it's social media that also implements ActivityPub, which is the protocol that supports federation. There's differences in the two software in how they handle certain things, but you've probably seen posts from Pleroma and never even realized it bc from within Mastodon they just look like normal posts.

@melissasage I see! I have Mastodon, do I need to create an account on Pleroma? Then I am assuming I will need a "client" like Tusky?

@goofysufi nope! They're just different kinds of software that do the same thing. You're probably already following Pleroma users. You don't need to create an account just to see posts. That said, if you want to try out Pleroma just to see what it's like, you can make an account on any Pleroma instance. There's a list of them you can check on https://fediverse.network/pleroma - and btw, fediverse.network is a great site in general! You should be warned that Pleroma has a reputation, because a lot of right-wing people make Pleroma instances and some Pleroma devs have been controversial in the past. I'm honestly not familiar enough with it to tell you more than that, though.

@goofysufi Tusky is a popular Android client- just an app, basically. It's like downloading the Twitter app to your phone, but it connects to Mastodon and a few other supported Fediverse software. It's entirely optional, since the web interface also works very well on mobile, but I personally like Tusky a lot!

@melissasage yes! This is my point. When I asked someone how they are able to post longer than me on Tusky, they said lol that's because Pleroma. And i had to nervously laugh along because I wanted to fit in!NOW this makes so much sense. So the links of people's instances themselves don't tell me if they are mastodon or pleroma and so on... but they can be any of these. Correct?

@goofysufi If you just navigate to the page you should be able to watch it from your browser, same as Youtube, e.g. https://peertube.social/videos/watch/9c9de5e8-0a1e-484a-b099-e80766180a6d

@melissasage THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have been trying to search videos here because Fediverse means everything in same app right?

@goofysufi @goofysufi yeah! you can follow everything from everywhere, but some features aren't supported across the board, because the software does different things. For any fediverse software, you'll definitely get notifications, but if it seems to be wonky from the app you're using (because video won't load or whatever), then you can just navigate to the page it's from

@goofysufi most people around these parts won't really look down on you for asking something in good faith (in other words, not being a troll about it). That being said... I've been here for a bit over a year and I also don't know how peertube works XD

@hoppet @goofysufi The short version is that Peertube is to Youtube what Mastodon is to birdsite. And here is an explanation, hosted on Peertube.https://peertube.social/videos/watch/9c9de5e8-0a1e-484a-b099-e80766180a6d
