considering you can get aarch64 chromebooks that turbo up to 2.5ghz or so, that could make for a good aarch64 dev machine with *decent* instructions on how to get there from stock, so i will probably get one and document this since i need an aarch64 dev machine anyway

and since the "free market" places less value in the aarch64 chromebooks, you can pick them up cheap (~$250 US)

@kaniini I'm pretty sure there was something that suggested Chromebooks have a hardwired date as to when they will stop working. I'm not having much luck finding it unless it was inaccurate.

@grainloom because you can just walk into walmart and buy one of these. the PINE64 SBCs require additional kit as well, while a chromebook is literally a laptop. the chromebooks also have better specs.

@kaniini @grainloom The Pine laptops don't require an additional kit, do they? 4GB of RAM and an RK3399 for $200 isn't bad, though it's not as good as what you'd get if just buying a board without a display/keyboard from NXP.

@kaniini I'm in a chromebrew group and the most active member uses an aarch64 machine. She hates it. There's a lot of gaps in software coverage. If you wanna rip off Chrome OS, just make sure to get the right laptop. She and I both had the problem where our particular laptops cannot have Chrome OS removed unless we wanna write our own drivers.

@kaniini @grainloom The Pinebook pro is really neat :DBuuuuuut, hard to get a hold of at the moment. I really like Pine64's commitment to community centered products but it does mean their popular items tend to sell out quickly and they aren't running with margins that justify a whole lot of inventory. That being said! Very solid hardware so far. If you don't mind waiting I don't know of a better way to get a full keyboard hexacore magnesium alloy chassis laptop for $200 and they seem to be pretty awesome to their software partners.
