So, hey guys. Since niu is soon to close down, I want to start a new instance with the same spirit. Which software would you prefer? I'm tempted to use Misskey, but I'm willing to reconsider. Please boost!

One reason for Misskey is it has some nice features. Also there are lots of good Pleroma instances out there.

@newt the thing about misskey is that they have a lot of cool-looking features, but in general, their misskey specific features don't federate. Depending on your view, this can be important.

@shpuld the UI is gorgeous. Reactions are dope, and I miss them in other AP implementations. Probably something else, but these two are off top of my head.

@lain some mastodon features don't federate either afaik. I don't think it's a very huge problem since the majority of users use just the core stuff.

@newt If easy setup is something you want, I can recommend pleroma. Another advantage is there being plenty of folks to ask if you can't figure something out.

@newt hey, I was considering doing something similar over on https://newniu.moe. If you want to get involved in something like that, I think we should unite, as having multiple niu sucessors would make the community more fragmented, which is exactly what we're trying to avoid.

@NekoSock @newt if keeping mastodon like features is a must, I'd either go for another mastodon instance or a misskey instance. Misskey is pretty fucking impressive in terms of functionality, so that would be my choice.

@NekoSock @newt looking at the misskey installation guide, I'd say it rivals pleroma in ease of setup. That said, I presume misskey will be more resource intensive, considering it uses redis.

@newt i tried misskey in the past, in my experience it had slow federation times, also bloated and slow. if you update the frontend, misskey blocks users from using the perfectly working old one with a modal popup, telling users to refresh.i dont think its the best choice IMO

@lainThey don't federate because other software doesn't support it (they federate between Misskey instances tho) However, they've shown that they'll make the feature work with other software if it's adopted e.g. polls@newt

@sjw @newt many of the misskey features don't even federate between misskey instances. and they way that polls were makes me wish they never tried to federate in the first place (although this one is mostly to blame on mastodon).anyway, not out to 'bash' misskey, it's fine software, but they don't see themselves as an AP project first and it shows.

@fristiI mean, if you consider a few MB of RAM resource intensive then sure. For the most part, they're comparable in CPU utilisation but Misskey uses around 500 MB more RAM than Pleroma (not counting the 20 MB or so of redis)@NekoSock @newt
