Do you think mastodon will become mainstream someday?

@poojasinhaa Will the Fediverse as a whole? Could be. It’d be nice if it did as that would get more people away from the overly centralized places. Will Mastodon itself? Good question. If one is referring to mastodon.social then I’d hope it didn’t. Not that it’s a bad place/instance or anything, but that’d just be moving from one centralized data mining entity to another which doesn’t seem like that much of an improvement to me. That’s just me though

@wolfie but don't you think eventually it will? Maybe not sooner but someday?

@poojasinhaa It depends. Changing platforms is hard for a lot of people. Honestly, I think they make it harder on themselves than it needs to be, however either way they think of it as such. It also depends a lot on what one is speaking of. If one means that more people will join the large instances, then sure, one can hope. If one means that most people will, as I would say, properly join the Fediverse and setup their own instance, then I’m not sure. Doing so isn’t overly complex, but it is obviously harder than just signing up at Mastodon. It also doesn’t help that Mastodon has tried very hard to make it appear that the Fediverse is Mastodon and that there isn’t really anything outside it. In other words, they super want to be the birdie place. Personally, I’d like to see more people setting up their own instances and taking back control over their privacy and data. Will that happen? Can’t say. The barriers to doing so get lower every day, so maybe one can hope.
