@tilak Welcome to Mastodon is a decentralised platform so there can be many instances and you can also have one, a user can signup in an instance accessing all the users of content from the fediverse(connected instances), you can move from one instance to other or can host one yourself read around in #FediverseAMA each instance has their own admin mstdn.social and mastodon.social has different admins by deault you follow the admins when you sign up.

@tilak Yes. Mastodon is the central/main thing. mstdn one is an instance created by someone (I think @stux) on a different server. That's in my limited knowledge. So no guarantees I'm technically all correct here, but that's about the difference.

@hg6 @stux right so it means i could technically have some instance for say, people who love cricket and have conversations within that. So something like a Slack channel or a facebook group but on a platform level!?

@tilak yes they are. But doesn't matter much. You can be part of any instance and still be connected to entire fediverse.

@atamariya After using it a bit I get the point now. Quite cool.
