@RunningInCircles You started the year before me. I started with Debian Potato in February or March 2001.

@xosem @fitheach Oooh, the decision between waiting for an iso image to download via dialup vs how long it would take to come through the post 😀 Family not being able to call the house because the phone line was always engaged, vast phone bills.

@RunningInCircles @xosem @fitheach I was 2004 I think. Once the fancy Ubuntu CDs were starting to circulate. I think I dual booted for a long time, until getting broadband at home (never got dialup working on my cheap laptop, "winmodems" were a bane I think.)

@priryo yes! Those brown-orange CDs. My sister came home also with one of those from a cafe/university/wherever It felt easy and amazingly fast compared to windows. Legal and supported software to my daily needs.I'm grateful my hardware of the date was supported because if it hadnt worked it's likely I would not be using linux now. That's why IMO install parties have sense, and being vocal about using freesoftware on casual chats too (ex.)@RunningInCircles @fitheach

@xosem I'm not aware of any of my non-IT friends who installed Windows on a PC (or Mac). "Normal" people buy a PC with an OS already installed. When it fails for some reason, they buy a new PC. That is why Linux on the Desktop never took off.@priryo @RunningInCircles
