"The alt-right is growing. To stem it, some liberals are calling for censorship. YouTube is threatening to revoke BPS’s account based on community complaints. But censorship is no solution. It violates our commitment to free expression and almost never works. Censorship can have the effect of drawing attention to the voices being censored ... [alt-right] are succeeding because they are explaining the world to people who are watching their means of making a living crumble"https://shorensteincenter.org/anatomy-of-alt-right-youtuber/

@strypey Yes, and censorship allows them to paint themselves as the victims of a conspiracy (their favourite word).

Following logically from that ..."Oh, and it goes without saying that if the people of Group X are staring at you demandingly, waiting for you to hate the right enemies with the right intensity, and ready to castigate you if you fail to castigate loudly enough, you may be hanging around the wrong group ... Forgive your friends if some of them suggest that maybe Group X wasn't so awful after all..."- #EliezerYudkowskyhttps://www.lesswrong.com/s/pvim9PZJ6qHRTMqD3/p/JKxxFseBWz8SHkTgt

@strypey this is the kind of dynamic I struggle with a lot. To the extent that some variant of it landed me in mental hospital 20 years ago, something I am still getting over. I tend to identify with radical ideas but also have issues with the way that radical groups tend to have quite rigid with us or against us dynamics. A friend said something about an old anarchist slogan being 'there is no them and us, just us'. I like this idea even though it throws up contradictions.
