Mixed feelings on this. I dislike the public spectacle that middle class people have made of watching poor people kill each other over crap at walmart. It’s not funny to me. It’s sad. We’re not a society of zen monks, most of need Things to live and many of us want Things just to improve our quality of life. It’s not inherently shallow. I do loathe the idea of retail workers having to work on Thanksgiving night for the “door buster sales”.

@sweetmercury I’m not blaming the shoppers inherently either. We all know how hard it is to live and someone struggling to make ends meet might suddenly be able to afford a material comfort that would be unthinkable for the rest of the year. Notice how none of this really has to do with Christmas shopping either.

@sweetmercury the problem is those shoppers are being duped. The “deals” on Black Friday are not the best prices available throughout the year and many are simply manufactured to LOOK like a good price or are so limited as to be meaningless. They’re loss-leaders for the first 25 people so the next 100 buy a high margin alternative. When I was at Circuit City (RIP) we had 10 or 12 of the “door buster” TV, and like 60 of a TV that was $50 more. It’s a con job.
