There is literally nothing wrong with using “they” if you don’t know or don’t care what someone’s gender identity is.

@moonman that's what I mean, export that way of speaking English to every corner of the planet, it's extremely US-centric

@roko it is explicitly against stack exchange rules to "avoid" using someone's pronouns.

@roko the good news is you could probably write stack exchange answers for years and never have to use a personal pronoun.

@moonman @orekix Who are "they"? Progressives are not an authority over the English grammar, is "singular they" correct English or not? That's all it matters.

@roko stack exchange is good for finding things that should have been in a tool's documentation. I rarely use it to help me solve programming problems.

@moonman @orekix Wait, you are actually proposing a more common sense approach to the Stack Exchange fiasco, I was not aware of the context.I don't think they will back down though.

@moonman so how do you solve those issues? I either bug someone I know or more often just come back to it later either by going home or setting a calendar event to think about it.

@moonman @roko seriously? Like just using someone’s proper name in a slightly awkward sentence structure?

@moonman @roko the odd thing is that I've met people before who only use "they", rather than any gender-specific pronoun.I actually kind of liked that perspective, and can't wrap my head around why people would assume it's an attack on someone's assigned or chosen pronouns.

@sean @moonman @roko I've always been one to use they. Comes from when I had to do a lot of tech support and I wasn't trying to make assumptions about someone's gender based on voice. That bit me in the ass a few times. I do apologize if that's ever offended anyone.

@bort @sean "they" is plural 3rd person. A person is generally only singular barring any dissociative issues. You're a fuckin scrub if you bend the language to suit the vernacular of the presentry. @moonman

@sean @roko @moonman I guess this explains why I haven't been bothered about using they: "An examination by Jürgen Gerner of the British National Corpus published in 1998 found that British speakers regardless of social status, age, sex, or region used the singular they overwhelmingly more often than the gender-neutral he or other options."If I'm not sure of someones gender or if it isn't relevant then I will use they.

@roko @moonman @sean Haha. It was also used in The Canterbury Tales! Not sure what it means though."And whoso fyndeth hym out of swich blame, They wol come up..." — Chaucer, "The Pardoner's Prologue" of The Canterbury Tales (c. 1400)
