I wonder what's up with the first batches of the Librem 5. They supposedly started shipping September 24th, which was two weeks ago now.Yet as far as I can tell, not a single soul on the internet other than purism themselves have even so much as posted a picture of the phone yet.

@quad I was sufficiently distracted by pinephone stuff recently, but you make a good point.

@quad haven't they been continually postponed? I'm still hoping for them, but iirc, this isn't a surprise, sadly.

@slylax No, they ship them in batches, which is controversial in its own way: https://puri.sm/posts/librem-5-shipping-announcement/ But their social media team has provided a fair bit of video and photos of what seems like working phones. So they seem to exist and be functional. But they also announced that the first phones went out two weeks ago: https://puri.sm/posts/first-librem-5-smartphones-are-shipping/The fact that seemingly nobody has gotten their hands on one seems odd. Even with fairly crappy shipping, at least a few people should've gotten one two weeks after shipments started.

@brad I dunno, I just have this feeling that purism are somehow trying way too hard to ship before the PinePhone, even in a half-finished hardware state.Wouldn't surprise me at this point if they twisted their works to make it sound like they sent phones out sooner than they actually did.For all we know the post could just mean the first batch got sent from china on its way to their HQ and they've only just begun sorting prior to sending them out.

@brad Also PinePhone looking good.Software looking even worse than Purism's did pre-launch though. Which is what I expected, but hopefully community support can fix a lot of that very quick

@quad yeah I saw some laggy stuff, but the fact that it should still run way more software means you cold at least use it like a fancy SBC and have services running on it, maybe drop into a shell and use a physical keyboard if that would help performance

@brad Well yeah, but the Librem 5 does that too. It's a linux phone just the same. While Purism only officially supports PureOS, for quite obvious reasons, they can't go around maintaining every distro out there themselves. They haven't locked down flashing of whatever else as far as I can tell based on the dev kit info.

@brad Yeah but what I care about is not having a portable SBC.I want the ability to throw my Android phone out the window as soon as possible. The Librem 5 looks to still be a bit laggy, especially the web browser, that's close to garbage. But it looks like you could have it as your only phone and actually survive quite well.

@brad Not really, their difference has been in their approaches.Purism have been focusing on creating a phone that's as open, free and good as possible. At least to the degree possible with current hardware offerings while trying to retain most modern functionality.Pine have been focusing more on getting readily available and affordable hardware into the hands of developers and users who aren't filthy rich.We need both of them. I'm just sad that Librem seemed to do a full 180 from their mission when they heard the PinePhone was arriving, pushing to ship as soon as possible even if half-finished and REALLY wanting to get people to buy it before the PinePhone comes into existence

@brad At least one of their main positives, all the upstreamed code still seems to be doing well. They just seem too desperate to ship a product atm

@quad They could also be trying to ship in time for the holidays, or just generally soon because of missing past deadlines. I wouldn't think Pine actually influenced them much.

@brad I dunno, the timing seems oddly specific.Purism's phone was extremely incomplete as dev kids weren't even out, so people kinda knew they delay again. Then they announced the final shipment date as Q3 2020 "Coincidentally" just about two weeks after Pine showed their phone concept and said Q4 2020The rest of the timelines line up in this way making it seem like the Librem 5 regular "accidentally" 1-ups the pinephone.
