@Frinkeldoodle @ben I mean there's a balance to be made honestly, I think they mostly want to try detecting the site using url to avoid making unnecessary requests, but if that fails it should fall back to nodeinfo or something like that for sure instead of just saying lol I dunno

@pea @Frinkeldoodle @ben The problem is youtube-dl's structure prevents it from being able to do that.A PeerTube check could be added to the generic extractor maybe?

@mewmew @Frinkeldoodle @ben does it? I would imagine they could just add a second step to checking, first it tries the URL matching method, then if that fails it tries the "more invasive" methods

@pea @Frinkeldoodle @ben That's what the generic extractor is.What you'd do is check for something common to all PeerTube instances in the generic extractor and if that succeeds pass the URL to the PeerTube extractor.
