Carpenter worked with Orson Wells.He was--in the 1930s and 1940s--the gayest man in the United States.When he was visiting Welles, and the phone rang, Carpenter would answer it and identify himself as Welles's maid.

I read a rumor awhile back that the term 4f in relation to military disqualification originated in the Civil War. The rumor says that it was used to disqualify people who didn't have their 4 front teeth to tear open gunpowder packets. Is that true?
