@zensaiyuki @dredmorbius I have my dreamwidth blog listed in my Mastodon bio. Dreamwidth supports rss feeds.

@unspeakablehorror Dreamwidth logs IP access and reveals it to blogholders for commenters. That's more exposure than I want or can in any conscience impose on those reading / commenting on my blog. It's probably several stripes of GDPR issues now too.@zensaiyuki

@dredmorbius @zensaiyuki yeah, that's why I turned off IP logging on my blog and use eg. Tor to obscure my ip address.

@dredmorbius @zensaiyuki also as far as I can tell, ip's are only logged for commenters, and only by blogs who do not turn ip logging off (which I have). People simply reading the blog are not ip logged. I don't like ip logging either, but fortunately they allow the blogger to turn it off.

@dredmorbius @zensaiyuki I can understand not liking it, though. I imagine the reason they include it is because it makes some bloggers feel safer if they can check the ip address of people sending anonymous hate to them or whatever, but it makes me more paranoid and I think it should be removed as well.

@unspeakablehorror @dredmorbius I suppose it envisions the person running the blog as an admin/moderator? ip address was useful once upon a time

@zensaiyuki @dredmorbius yeah, you should probably think of a Dreamwidth blogger as somewhat equivalent to a Mastodon admin, except that the only piece of info they can collect is the ips of commenters (not readers). A mastodon instance admin will surely have access (or potential access) to much more than that.

@zensaiyuki Right. That's enough of a barrier that it's not generally done. Creating a service and doing this ... *as a matter of course* strikes me as a quite different level.@unspeakablehorror

@dredmorbius @zensaiyuki but if you aren't using tor or a vpn or some other method to obscure your ip, you are still trusting any mastodon admins (and admins of all other sites you visit) with that info. I started a Dreamwidth account after I left Tumblr, where it's trivial to install an ip tracker to track anyone commenting or even reading your blog (as evidenced by the many people who have done this). So though I didn't leave Tumblr because of the ip trackers, Dreamwidth is better than that.

@dredmorbius @zensaiyuki Having read some true horror stories about Google and Facebook accessing private data of users, and knowing there are a number of Mastodon admins out there who I absolutely would not consider remotely trustworthy (even though there are many who are fine people), I don't consider end-user ip access to be a make or break issue for me when admins abusing their power can be much greater privacy threats.

@unspeakablehorror @dredmorbius i did manage to add your reddit thing. i thhiiink there’s something wrong with the rss feed’s timestamps though- unless you really did write all that at the exact moment i downloaded the feed.

@unspeakablehorror Again, I know this. It's one thing though to put *specific* and *timestamped* IPs in the hands of a smaller set of more-trusted admins, and in those of a less-trusted and much larger set of blog editors.Again: This practice has privacy implications that I'm unwilling to tolerate for *either* myself *or* others.NB: I have a Dreamwidth blog. I don't make use of it. For this amongst other reasons.@zensaiyuki

@dredmorbius @zensaiyuki And I would not suggest that you use a site you find inadequate for your purposes. However, I will note some ambiguous wording in the doc you linked. You say that Dreamwidth publicly presents up addresses, which implies they are accessible to people besides the blog owner. This is not the case. You can also tell if a blog owner has that enabled or not. If you go to a blog (not the reading pg) and click on reply in a post it will say that the blog logs ips if they

@dredmorbius @zensaiyuki (cont) have that setting turned on. So the reader can then know and decide if they want to reply and have their ip logged (which is only directly displayed to the blog owner, not to any other readers of the blog) . Blog owners like myself do not have this message displayed because we don't log ips even for ourselves. So Dreamwidth does not have public IP logging like you say, and some bloggers there do not even have private ip logging, and readers can (cont)

@dredmorbius @zensaiyuki tell the difference before doing anything that will log their ip. This is a lot better for privacy than blogs (like Tumblr and some others) that allow site trackers to track all readers of a blog, and don't necessarily inform them, and don't give them the option to opt-out of being tracked (either by eg. using a VPN or opting not to post a reply).
