there is no 'polite' way to tell someone what to do. the act of telling people what to do is inherently impolite.

@kaniini Any time someone tells me what to do with some kind of authoritative tone, I mentally append "or I will use what limited influence I have to attempt to make some kind of negative impact on a limited portion of your existence"It doesn't change their tone but it keeps things in context for me.

@Trysdyn people need to learn that they are in control of their own self-agency, and only their own self-agency. the second you tell others to do things, even if you believe yourself to have the best of intentions, you're a cop.

@kaniini Had similar thoughts. It's an okay place to have some fun talks while procrastinating but it's too addictive.Took a week break earlier and it was quite nice. Might do a month this time.

so what i mean by people should learn their place, it has nothing to do with silencing anyone.what i mean is that there are circles of individual responsibility: you are responsible for what you do and say, and I am responsible for what I do and say.if you believe in doing things in a certain way, demonstrate these beliefs by following them to the best of your ability. for example, if you believe in the Mastodon CW system, then you should endeavour to use it frequently as a matter of personal responsibility. i have nothing against people who use the CW system extensively.but, when you subscribe to other people, you are consenting to receiving their posts composed according to whatever values they have. this means that if someone does not compose posts in a way you like (such as not using CWs), you have the responsibility to not subscribe, and if necessary, block or mute them.in other words, you have the responsibility to curate your own experience -- you can't expect everyone to curate their own content to your specific requirements.federation with certain mastodon groups have taken a significant toll on my own mental health, to the point that honestly, I am starting to question whether the fediverse is for me or not anymore.but either way, I will say this. there are people on both sides of these fights that are *itching* to take matters into their own hands. those people will burn the fediverse to the ground. the only way to preserve what we've built together is to continue working together -- but we can't do that if people are imposing their own values on others. i know this is true because i saw IRC basically destroyed by many of these same people.fundamentally, people must be free to compose their posts however they wish -- with or without CWs. if their decisions come with consequences, they come with consequences, but one shouldn't impose their own standards on others.

@kaniini there is a german phrase "Ratschläge sind auch Schläge". it doesnt translate well into english but "Ratschläge" means advice and "Schläge" are hits. so giving someone advice is still an act of violence

@khaosgrille this is *exactly* what i am getting at.the imposition of one's cultural values on another person is, itself, an act of violence.there are exceptions of course: fascists should be sent packing.but people show up with this passive-aggressive shit because they're looking for a fight.and perhaps i should learn to stop giving them one, but that's not so easy for me, because i come from a background of having to fight for every single thing i've ever had, including the ability to fucking eat a hot meal at times.

@khaosgrille while i am a socialist (a card-carrying DSA member even), i believe strongly in personal responsibility and autonomy.this means that there are areas where we should work together (such as for the common defense, in the fediverse world this would be against spammers, for example), but there are other areas where ultimately it is best left to the user (such as curation of their interactions)
