there are three variations of civilization.scarcity, enforced scarcity, and post scarcity. we live in the middle of the three.

the only difference between enforced scarcity and post scarcity is political will.

some things will always be scarce on Earth. like helium, or ambergris. the value of these things however is very much irrelevant when all of the things we need to sustain dignified human lifes are themselves in abundance now more than ever. wealth is not founded on scarcity, it is founded on the myth of capital.

water should be free. we have a lot of it. electricity and clothes and shelter and food and medicine should all be free. We have these things in abundance, the only thing keeping us from distributing them and making even more is this pervasive myth of scarcity, when in reality we have much more than we need to sustain many more times as many people go hungry or homeless each day.

@starwall >water should be freeAbout 3% of the Earth's oceans are drinkable. It would be nice to increase that number. In any case, we would need to sustain existing infrastructure either ourselves (community) or pay someone else for their time and effort (the way it is now).>electricity and clothes and shelter and food and medicine should all be freeElectricity currently needs to be generated. The materials used to build the means of doing so aren't 'free'. Same with clothes, shelter, food and medicine. They ultimately cost time and effort.

@thatbrickster we have the means and the labor all we lack is the will. will they still take time and effort? of course. but the myth here is that this is a logistical impossibility, when it is only made to be impossible when we live under capitalism. The works of science and technology could have given us a society without poverty 200 years ago and wealth to spare, but instead it the working class get scraps compared to the wealth they create.

@starwall I agree that we have the labour and the means, but the means weren't 'free'. It's not logical in my mind to make its output free if the means of producing it weren't.I believe in voluntaryism from someone whom helped me understand their (former) way. We, as individuals, have the power to do a lot and don't need mob rule to get what we want. We could have built local community broadband hubs and the like but it's easier to compensate someone else to do it.I think we just want the benefits from the work of others instead of working towards what we want. We work for a cause we may not believe in (like I did) so we can pay for what we do.

@starwall except that in reality it isnt. Drinkable water is scarce and poorly distributed :/ So are the vast majority of pharmaceutical products. Not everything is as simple as aspirin to produce :/ Please understand that I am as aware as you are on issues related to poverty and climate :). I just fail to see how "post-capitalism" or "post-free-market" societies are achievable without the needs of an totalitarian state-planned economy :/

@adidal have you ever read Ursula Le Guin's "The Dispossesed"? If not I highly recommend it. There's a good free audio version of it out there too. Before I read it I kinda thought the same way as you do now, but it really sparked my imagination. You might be right, but don't you get a little excited at all by the possibility of being wrong in this? A civilization without poverty and with the barest levels of organization, without need or even much for want, no replicator required

@thatbrickster @starwall Hey, have you ever heard of the sun? It does this thing where it's really fucking hot and really fucking bright all the time, and it's probably gonna do that for longer than humanity will exist for, but so little of that energy is actually utilized by people. Why isn't all the energy that goes into making grocery store parking lots hot as fuck utilized by people in some useful way? (1/2)
