The most shocking instance of this in recent months was when everyone started smugly making fun of claims that videogames cause gun violence. Of course the reactionary narrative for this is ridiculous. But young men are constantly committing shootings in the name of white supremacy and misogyny, ideologies which are closely linked to gaming communities and actively promoted by a large proportion of popular videogames

@garfiald yeah I think that's a good point, as well as the idea that politics of some videogames (which are heavily influenced by the amerikan state) spread toxic ideology. But then again, that stuff is everywhere, not just in videogames.

@CyclopsCaveman That kind of strikes me as common sense, I will always argue that informed critique of a work is often better than complete avoidance. But the "personal responsibility" of the reader operates at a fundamentally different scale compared ideologies as they are constructed by media. Personal responsibility doesn't automatically cancel out the perpetuation of systems by ideology.
