What would happen to a subscription video streaming platform that served up the sort of content posted on FSE daily in the form of news and entertainment programs?Would it be permitted to take credit cards?Assume it is run by a Napoleon of commerce, every aspect perfectly executed, all infrastructure in house. You think it wouldn't be destroyed?Really?

@judgedread So I'm going to ignore the fact that no one would pay for a service like that since FSE is already free for everyone to view. I know what you mean though, just pointing this out.It would almost certainly be blacklisted from credit card companies, banks and paypal. The ways to get around this though would be to accept payment via cash-by-mail, giftcards and cryptocurrency.Unfortunately for a website like this to exist it would have to be creative when it came to the types of payments it accepted, because banks and credit card providers are given way too much power to censor and gatekeep.

@ZW748VSJSiwWMANMwbst That would be the workaround for payments. It would be attacked in other ways as well. FSE is ignored because 650 users aren't any threat to the system, at least not any that the system recognizes. Pewtube, which was a prototype of what I am talking about, quickly fell under media attack, was cut off by payment processers and shut down under mysterious circumstances.

@judgedread I feel there will always be ways around censorship and those trying to deplatform. Look at 8chan it's going under a huge amount of fire right now, but from what I'm aware it's still coming back up. It's just taking awhile since they literally had the rug pulled out from under them. There will always be ways to host free speech content, so long as it isn't illegal. It just gets harder depending on what precautions you have in place and how hard you're hit when you get hit.

@ZW748VSJSiwWMANMwbst Written content and pics are relatively inexpensive to host so efforts to completely suppress them have failed. The limitation is that most people aren't interested in reading long internet threads or wading through the sea of memes in search of a few pearls. The power of the mainstream comes from control over video/film, and that is the power they are determined to monopolize. They have the self funding - in fact profitable - propaganda machine that must be countered. By denying payment processing and access to other infrastructure they abort the countermeasure.

@judgedread There will always be freespeech alternatives out there. Bitchute.com is finally a freespeech alternative to YouTube and Peertube could be used as freespeech video host as well. While I understand what you're saying the mainstream media has too much power in general, there will always be people who spend a lot of time looking for freespeech platforms to express themselves, not just through text, but through audio, video and all sorts of media.Just look at torrenting. Hollywood fucking hates that you can rather easily grab the latest hit movie/song/game for free with little to no effort. And everyone knows how to do it.

@ZW748VSJSiwWMANMwbst Bitchute has been cut off by their credit card processor and they were told it was due to pressure from the bank.Monetization is needed for alt media because video is expensive, far more expensive than text or images.Torrenting is a different issue because it has no monetization and it just distributes existing content. A viable ecosystem for generating new content is what's needed to counter existing content.

@judgedread I thought we already discussed alternatives for free speech platforms to gain funding. Unfortunately they need to get creative but there are plenty of options out there. I thought we were talking about other ways the content could be shutdown aside from payment processors.

@ZW748VSJSiwWMANMwbst Domain name seizure, DDOS attacks, denying access to Cloudflare and other DDOS mitigation services, shutdown of bank accounts - that last has shockingly been done to people who are just known far right activists!

@judgedread Yes I'm aware that all these things are issues and they are absolutely unacceptable. But there are alternative DDOS/Doman providers that are more lenient as far as freespeech is concerned,It's sad that people have to host completely legal content as if they were running an illegal drug cartel, but unfortunately that's just how things are at the moment. We let the pot boil slowly and this is what happened. Companies and Governments bowing down to whatever retard can screech the loudest. None of the currently running U.S candidates look like they plan on changing anything.I agree with you, it's horrible what's going on and what people are allowed to get away with, a huge outrage actually, but other than constantly try to find alternative methods to freely express ourselves I don't know what we can do.

@ZW748VSJSiwWMANMwbst It's an unsolved problem, that's for sure. People who can be satisfied with text are OK for now, the fediverse and Pleroma really does make censoring text damn near impossible. So we got that going for us, which is nice.

@oneway No one involved in this is omnipotent or prescient.Useful idiot is still a very likely Torba-Gab scenario, even including many of the little details we've gone over - him suddenly pivoting right and his friends being shocked. That could be his own idea - Trump's massive popularity was not exactly a secret by summer 2016.Torba is not Bane. @pvelarde123 @ZW748VSJSiwWMANMwbst The copyright cartels wouldn't support it. They WANT you locked into Apple or Windows, companies that bake DRM into the system. The issue is playback of commercial content, not pirated. Most people aren't pirates.

Piracy numbers entirely depend on what legal options are currently on offer and the convenience of those legal offerings. If the convenience of legally purchasing a Netflix subscription is easier than pirating a movie/tvshow people will opt for the Netflix subscription, but if it's more expensive/more difficult to legally get what you want, people have no issues with pirating what they want.@pvelarde123 @judgedread
